Have been using for many years on my OpenSuse boxes some programs as root that don't work as normal user. These include etherape, thunar, grsync, leafpad, etc. Never had any problems with this as my box is on a 5 user lan with its private domain name (xxx.lan) a router, Nat, each system has it's own local firewall.
