X doesn't want to start anymore

Postby Icyton » Mon Jul 01, 2013 2:45

I just made an update of my system, and once again, X starts to mess up. X simply won't start at boot, even if I use an older kernel or go into recovery mode. Does anyone know how to fix this, since I have no idea, and I can't find any information on it.

You should post What X desktop.. KDE, Xfce, Gnome, LXDE, OPenBox etc
If you are being dropped into a console on boot try
Code: Select all
startx

Maybe look in /var/log see if one of the logs picks the error..

The window manager I use is LXDE. When Sabayon starts, I get put in a terminal that has backgrounds and stuff like the login manager. Startx doesn't work, that's the first thing I always try to use when X messes up. I will look in the log file, but the problem is that I can't really post my log here, since I can't copy-paste without a GUI.

Ahh LXDE
I haven't used LXDE with Gentoo
but......... with Debian I would start LXDE with
Code: Select all
startlxde

If that works then edit your desktop.conf as in
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-89 ... art-0.html

EDIT: /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf

Nope, it didn't work. It just tells me that there is not directory, I can't tell you the exact details for reasons I've already explained.

Since no one has answered for nearly a day, and since it appears that it will take a long time to figure out what went wrong, I've decided to install Gentoo, which I can do without problems since my home-directory has it's own partition. I want to say thanks for those who were willing to help me, y'all are like wizards to me.

Sorry, been working on another install elsewhere..
Too bad that you can't get the LXDE to work again. Seems the problem very likely stems back to the problems encountered with the Update.
That being said Sabayon is still and excellent OOTB Gentoo install. Much quicker then a Gentoo install.
I attempted to install a Gentoo install recently on 2 of my laptop Machines. These have both have
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN wifi
The tried a 12.1 AND a 13 and both would not light my wifi with a iwlwifi module.
I read and found that the kernel is having problems with that wifi mod and a back date of the kernel for me may be in order.
Point being you had a working Gentoo, Sabayon with LXDE until the Update. The base install will take you about 20 minutes. Consider that before a whole day on the Gentoo install which could bring other Grief.

Good Luck.
