Gnome 3 in fallback mode....for no good reason. [Solved]

Postby The N00b » Mon Apr 22, 2013 1:15

hi guys,

my gnome3 is failing to load and is working in some kind of fall back mode, where instead of the gnome3 activity thing working, it is in oldskool mode with the applications menu and everything...(like this: http://slashraul.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/app.png )

Details:

i have a samsung laptop with intel ivybridge i5 3210m processor and Nvidia gtx650m graphics card implemented via Nvidia Optimus tech....

after install, everything worked..intalled kdenlive, steam and counterstrike...all work well, getting decent FPS on counterstrike aswell (1.6) but it was using the intel gpu and not the nvidia chip so when i installed team fortress 2 (game) it was not rendering at acceptable FPS...

so i decided to get bumblebee working, by fixing the error which was:

Code: Select all
[ERROR]The Bumblebee daemon has not been started yet or the socket path /var/run/bumblebee.socket was incorrect.
[ERROR]Could not connect to bumblebee daemon - is it running?

for this i followed this:
http://www.danilopianini.org/index.php? ... &Itemid=23

Code: Select all
mkdir /etc/VirtualGL/
equo remove nvidiabl
Repeat the previous command until all the nvidiabl packages are unistalled
equo install nvidia-drivers
eselect opengl set nvidia
reboot

after reboot, gnome 3 stopped working and runs in some kind of fall back mode.

then i decided to completely remove both driver and bumblebee:

equo remove nvidiabl
and
equo remove bumblebee

and re install everything as per that guide:

* equo install bumblebee
* rc-update add bumblebee default
* reboot

* equo install nvidia-drivers
* eselect opengl set nvidia
* reboot

after this reboot....now when i try glxgears, im getting following error:

Code: Select all
glxgears
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
:cry:

gnome 3 is still in fall back mode...which is really annoying because im too used to the gnome3 Ui and cant even contemplate using this menu clicky clicky ui....i need to do a LOT of work, and really can do with my gnome3 working again.

Re: Gnome 3 in fallback mode....for no good reason.

Postby The N00b » Mon Apr 22, 2013 1:20

ive posted in the 3D Desktops and Window Managers section because i was wondering, should gnome3 go into fall back mode if nvidia and bumblebee are not working?

or should it just revert back to the intel gpu and mesa drivers and get gnome3 powered up??

because its just nvidia gpu thats not working, the intel gpu works flawlessly.

but if this section is inapropriate, mods please feel free to move the thread...

sorry in advance.

UPDATE:

i was searching and searching and re-discovered the "run Nvidia config" sugestion..

this reminded me of when i had similar problem under linuxmint....it worked then..

so......i ran it :P.....it edited the xorg file, every thing hunky dori......and then i clicked reboot..

following came up

Code: Select all
*Starting VirtualGL ...
Xauth: file list does not exist

so i typed "quit" and it booted up normaly minus bumblebee and virtualgl...

then from after logging into the commandline interface i did:

equo remove bumblebee

after restart, now i get a completely blank screen when i boot up...

the thing is not even booting up now :'(

http://i.qkme.me/3pqpgv.jpg
that middle of the night feeling one gets....when they break their installation to a point where it wont even go past boot up stage :'( :'( :'(

and try fruitlessly to cure the problem :'( for hours and hours and hours... :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

Hi, I suspect Bumblebee is not working, thus your dedicated GPU is not working properly and Gnome is stuck into fallback mode.
You should not edit xorg.conf carelessly, restore your old version of that file, as it was when you posted it here.

What kind of output you get from the following commands?
(as root)
Code: Select all
rc-update | grep bumblebee
/etc/init.d/bumblebee start

PS: I edited your first post to use [ Code ] for logs, it helps making your post more readable.

[edit]: fixed missing 'l' typos, thanks to Ryuno-Ki.
