slow moving windows

Postby paul42 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 23:13

Hi All,

I've noticed the past few weeks that when I go to move a window (click and drag) on my screen, the re-draw is agonizingly slow. From clicking the title bar and dragging to the 1st redraw in a new location is probably close to 2 seconds. Scrolling inside of Chrome or Thunderbird is unchanged and quick, but gedit is very slow, even for a very small document.

I am running XFCE 4.10, X.Org 1.13.3, nv 2.1.20, and nouveau 1.0.6

This is my xorg.conf:
Code: Select all
Section "Module"
    SubSection  "extmod"
       Option    "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load    "i2c"
    Load    "ddc"
    Load    "vbe"
    Load    "dri"
    Load    "glx"
    Load    "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
     Option    "AllowMouseOpenFail"    "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Generic Monitor"
    VertRefresh    43 - 60
    HorizSync      28 - 80
    Option     "DPMS"                  "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "nv"
    #BusID    "PCI:01:00"
    #Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    #Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    #Option "BusType" "PCI"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    # UseEvents is causing segmentation faults with
    # NVIDIA 6xxx, 7xxx and >=275.xx.xx drivers
#########    #Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"
    Option "DPMS" "TRUE"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Identifier    "Screen 0"
    Device        "SabayonVga0"
    Monitor       "Generic Monitor"
    #Option       "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

    DefaultDepth 24

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth      8
        ViewPort   0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           16
        ViewPort        0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

    SubSection "Display"
        Depth           24
        ViewPort        0 0
        #Modes      "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection

EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier   "Main Layout"
    Screen 0    "Screen 0"
    Option "StandbyTime" "10"
    Option "OffTime" "20"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
   #Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Running sudo lspci -k gives me:

Code: Select all
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G80 [GeForce 8800 GTS] (rev a2)
   Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device c815
   Kernel modules: nouveau

I do have the following error in Xorg.0.log, though I know XAA was removed in X.Org 1.13. Should I be concerned my system is still looking for it?

Code: Select all
[    35.200] (EE) NV: Failed to load module "xaa" (module does not exist, 0)

Any tips/hints or questions appreciated. Thank You.

Drivers in use are "nv" not "nouveau"

Code: Select all
Driver      "nv"

(x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv)

edit your xorg.conf and change the drivers.

make sure that x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau are installed

According to Rigo, nouveau is installed. I changed xorg.conf to use "nouveau" instead of "nv", and on reboot it hung before getting to the login screen, with a blank screen, and a flashing cursor in the top left. Rebooted twice, same result.

Thank You.

you've pasted xorg.conf with "nv" module loaded.

OpenGL should be set to xorg-x11

Code: Select all
# eselect opengl set xorg-x11

Driver : "nouveau" (move "nv" to "nouveau" in xorg.conf)
OpenGL : xorg-x11

Reboot

I'm sorry, I just pasted the xorg.conf that I was running, I had to change the "nouveau" back to "nv" to get it to boot. I did run the eselect command you specified and again specified "nouveau" in the xorg.conf file, and rebooted. I had the same result as before, a small flashing cursor in the top left. This is just after the task bar on the bottom gets to 100% in the boot process. I've checked various log files without any obvious issues.
