In my case, plasma-desktop keeps crashing.
I have deleted the .kde directory in my user's home.

Now, I have each time I login a crash, so I try run it manually:

It looks related to the desktop settings.
Sometimes it works when I set the number of virtual desktops.
I switch between 1 and 2 and it crashes once, then starts...
It is undeterministic though.

Same problem here, after upgrade to 4.8 (from main repo), KDE crashes after a few seconds. I would be happy to revert to 4.7, but I do not know how.

Gnome also says something has gone wrong and does not start. The only GE I can access is Openbox.

Anybody can help? I am relatively new to Sabayon, so I need detailed guide.

Thank you

Plasma in 4.8 crashes on me repeatedly when I have a USB-Stick connected while loggin into kde.
If you have some usb drive of any sort connected, you might try disconnecting that before login and see if kde works better then.

I guess this is a major bug in that new overhauled device-manager applet thingy, but likely not the only bug in 4.8-dot-zero.

Some people are having this problem while others can not reproduce the problem, a bug has been reported https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294134
Rather than downgrade to kde 4.7.x, I installed razor and will wait for the bug to be fixed

Workaround for me was to install x11-misc/razor-qt-0.4.1 from Sabayon Linux Limbo Repository
Code: Select all
equo install razor-qt

Restart computer, at login manager select Razor (with the kwin option) from the sessions manager
Configure to the way you like

At least I can now run my usual kde programs and use my usb drives/sticks
Notes
I have had no success running Compiz under razor-qt (getting use to kwin)
I had to resize the lower panel
Added Razor Removable Media plugin to panel

To the folks who are having issues with KDE 4.8.0, I don't believe it's possible to downgrade back to KDE 4.7.4 anymore. I was only able to do it while KDE 4.8.0 was still in Limbo and KDE 4.7.4 was still in the stable repo. Now that KDE 4.8.0 has propagated to the regular repo, it has superceded KDE 4.7.4 and is the only KDE version. I've managed to hang onto KDE 4.7.4 only because I've refused to install any upgrades since I discovered the plasma-shell instability problem and moved back to KDE 4.7.4 before it propagated to the stable repo. I guess the only option for others is Gnome (I suggest Cinamon as the shell) or razor-qt, or indeed another desktop until this bug gets fixed. Let's hope KDE 4.8.1 is better.

Stumbled across another workaround
Press Ctrl Alt and F1 keys at the same time, this will take you to tty1 (do not login)
Insert your USB stick/drive
Press Ctrl Alt and F7 keys at the same time, this will take you back to the GUI (tty7)
mount your USB stick/drive
when finished with it umount your USB stick/drive

First time I did this I went to tty12 and insert device
mounted device via dolphin (did what I had to with it) and selected safe removal via Disk Utility

Second time was with tty1
mount via Device Notifier (did what I had to with it) and umount device via Device Notifier

In my case it works if I have no disk device mounted on the USB port at all.
After login, I can insert it and it is mounted normally.
