KDE needs multiple reboots to start normally

Post by NotExcessive » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:23

Hi all - I have a problem with KDE that is driving me a little batty. For a long time, I've had no problems with KDE. Now recently, whenever I boot up the machine, most times it will hang at the end of the splash screen and just sit there. Going into a terminal, I see an item in the process list along the lines of eselect <defunct>.

If I reboot the machine enough times (anywhere from once to five or six times) then the machine boots up normally and KDE desktop happily comes up as if nothing were ever wrong. I was running KDE4.6 when it first started doing this; now this morning I've updated to KDE4.7 but that hasn't changed anything. I'm using nvidia-drivers-275.09.07#2.6.39-sabayon.

Is it possible to get an Xorg.log from right after the hang manifests itself? For instance using a livecd to boot right after you restart your comp because of the hang, grabbing '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' from your Linux partition?

BTW the

Code: Select all

[Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
signals errors with your hardware. I'd first think about an issue with your GFX card (overheating, other defects) but could also be related to your CPU or RAM modules or even your Mainboard. Especially if the problem has such erratic behaviour as to only manifest at seemingly random moments there's a great chance it's hardware related.

mcelog can capture hardware errors to a log file:

Code: Select all

equo install mcelog
It should install a cron job and log to /var/log/mcelog.

I don't think it's a hardware issue, as I also have Gnome installed, and it fires up reliably each and every time I boot up the machine. It's only KDE that requires repeated slapping!

I can't find any packages called mcelog, but anyway, here's the output of Xorg.0.log, taken just after the system stopped loading:

Code: Select all

Right... so what display manager do you have set in your

Code: Select all

/etc/conf.d/xdm
?
You said gdm started up fine, can you enter your kde session from the gdm login screen without it hanging? Do you only encounter the hang if you have kdm set to start up?
Try to perofrm a fresh kde install

Code: Select all

equo install --empty --configfiles kde-meta
equo conf update
I didn't see anything wrong in your log.

Oh my bad I thought it was in entropy. You can emerge it though

Code: Select all

emerge -av mcelog
but after you told me gnome works fine, having this may not be needed afterall.

The problem are python plasmoids. Remove or rename each of plasmoids in ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/plasmoids and find out which one makes plasma-desktop to hang. Sometimes helps to rename this directory before kde start, then remove not loaded plasmoids (red with white cross) from panel/desktop and readd them. but it works just until next reboot. It happens on both Gentoo and Sabayon.
