KDE 4.6 and most recent updates [Solved]

Postby tekwyzrd » Sat May 14, 2011 18:16

I installed the most recent set of updates and now have a kde desktop that looks really lousy due to "Desktop effects were too slow and have been suspended". Until now everything was fine, now the desktop effects don't work. Add to this the fact that every login I'm now forced to type in the user name since the previous user's name is no longer saved. I wonder how many other problems I'll find due to these updates.

not sure why, the update in kde has been a little annoying lately.
I would first try,

mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.old

If this does not cure it, you could try to re-install kde-meta. but be warned, sabayon does not ship with the complete meta package iirc. so

equo install kde-meta

will pull a few extras, with a combination of the above two fixes, kde is fine here.

mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.old didn't help
After doing so and logging in the effects message was there and effects won't enable.
There's obviously a problem here somewhere because using top I see kded4 process varying up and down and using anywhere from 48% to 98% of the cpu with the desktop effects disabled.

is an interesting issue, I can see by the post you have made and your join date, is not your first rodeo ;)

would be curious to see what equo --install --ask kde-meta would show
I am currently on gentoo, kde 4.6.3 I have desktop effects enabled and xbmc running as my music player.
firefox, several tabs open and a couple terminals. cpu is about 20 - 25%
I think this is high on a quadcore cpu for what is open, I ran the same on a p-4 3.2 cpu, used about 10%
But a few 6 months ago, kde updates, and kwin is a pig.

If kde-meta was already installed, in theory, kde-meta would only install one package, kde-base
So if it installs a bunch, you was missing several packages.

On the other hand, are you sure this is a kde issue and not a video driver issue?
You did eselect kernel list and it matches uname -r
eselect opengl list is set to nvidia
xorg.conf is set to nvidia

Just asking since a recent nvidia update may have changed opengl .... I sometimes forget to check the basics

on sabayon now, have the same apps running, is the same amount of cpu usage.
Just double check your system, kde may be a pita but does work.

Thanks, genfool
Running eselect opengl list revealed that the setting had changed to xorg-x11. Problem solved.
