X keeps crashing [Solved]

Postby DarkVader » Fri Mar 04, 2011 3:00

Hi all,

Have a problem where once I log into Sabayon, several times I'll crash and I'm back to the login page.

This all started when I installed the nvidia-drivers-260.19.29, was using 5.2 and updated to 5.5

I have reinstalled 5.5 but kept the home folder and still the problem persists, have also made a new user but still the same.

Using an 8800GTX graphics card with twin monitors, have installed PCLinuxOS as a backup until I sorted this out and everything is running fine with PCLOS

I noticed that you have a flat panel. Check if you have "nvidia-settings" installed. if not:

Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-settings

Then start nvidia-settings and take a look at the left side. Under the GPU-Section there should be your monitor listed. Normally under the "PowerMizer" function. Click on it and take a look if the "Force Full GPU Scaling"-Option is enabled. If so, uncheck the box. Restart! This should do the trick...

I face this error for >2 weeks. Removed nvidia drivers even. See:

http://bugs.sabayon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2183

It just keeps coming back. It makes my computing life very difficult. I don't know what to do next. Forget about using X? Wait for a fix? Distro hop?
Looks like many of us are having this problem. I think it could be Xorg itself, but then other distros would be reporting it (I don't read their forums so I don't know).

No luck with the methods from that thread but thanks for the suggestions

Now this one above looks really promising, nvidia-settings was already install on my system and I just unclicked the Force Full GPU Scaling Option, have been running for half a day with only one crash, when I was in the system setting and changing the colours, thanks for the advice Sisko43, my Sabayon install is in a workable condition :D

I also tidied up the errors from the x.org.log

Code: Select all
(EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)

by changing x.org.conf to

Code: Select all
Section "Module"
    SubSection     "extmod"
        Option         "omit xfree86-dga"
    EndSubSection
    Load           "i2c"
    Load           "ddc"
    Load           "vbe"
    Disable        "dri"
    Disable        "dri2"
    Load           "glx"
    Load           "synaptics"
EndSection

Note commenting them out doesn't work you have to Disable them, this was from this thread found here

While I was reading that thread I also noticed that I didn't have composite enabled in x.org.conf so I added that too.

Code: Select all
Section "Extensions"
    Option         "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

this still doesn't explain why my 3 computers exhibit the same sympthoms, even when not using nvidia-drivers.

Re: X keeps crashing [Solved]

Postby genfool » Sun Mar 06, 2011 20:15

urlwolf, I can only offer suggestions. I use a onboard 7150 and have a 8400gs, nvidia and kde work fine for me.
I do have an issue when I enable composting and use other apps like xbmc, I need to turn composting off.

I have found that opengl does not always get it right. This means, for several hours I searched for an answer to a problem I was having, weird issues and desktop crashing etc... I found that eselect opengl list was set to xorg-x11 and not nvidia.
Once I set it to nvidia, all was fine.

I have also seen many times while helping in irc, and on my own systems.
Sometimes older drivers do not get removed.
If you run "equo search nvidia" You will get a list of all a available drivers. If you study them, will show the available version and the installed version.
If you see more then 1 version installed, remove them. then equo install nvidia-drivers
This should install the correct driver for your running kernel.

About kernels, "eselect kernel list" then "uname -r" they should match, is also the correct version of nvidia-drivers you want to install.

If you do not have the latest kernel, "equo install linux-sabayon" will install it.
If you do install a newer kernel, be sure to equo install nvidia-drivers before a reboot,

In summary,
check that, eselect kernel list and uname -r match the kernel with the * is the one selected
eselect opengl list make sure that nvidia has the *
Make sure that only 1 driver shows installed, if in doubt "equo remove nvidia-drivers" then "equo install nvidia-drivers"

If you still have problems, run "equo deptest" then "equo libtest"
Pay attention if it pulls anything in.
Really is all I can think of at the moment, nvidia does work fine if everything is set up correctly, even my old agp 5900
