X crash after restoring a minimized window

It's about a month I have this problem and I can't find a solution.

my system has 2.6.34-sabayon kernel, an ATI Radeon HD 4650 (RV730 PRO) and I'm running KDE.

Sometimes - not always reproducible - I minimize a window and run another app.
Then I click the minimized window and the X server crashes, closing my session and bringing up the KDM login.

Another "symptom" is that sometimes (lets say konsole) just freezes, the menu stop working, the shell stops, but I can still control the window: minimize, restore, maximize and close the window.

My problem is that I don't know where to gather information because I looked all the logs and can't find any relevant message.

also I used sabutil but can't found anything.

What can I do to gather some info?

Note: I'm suspecting about my video driver... I'm using fglrx driver and I will test with another driver

so, using another driver is a good idea - but also, what wm are you using? Is compositing enabled? Is direct or indirect rendering enabled?

Possibly same problem here. Restoring minimized applications from the taskbar and exiting fullscreen mode (Gwenview) in KDE quits the Plasma desktop.

card: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X700 (PCIE)
driver: xorg-x11

Same problem here, still unfixed (http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=21957). Seems exclusive to version 1.8 of Xorg Server combined with the free ATI driver, at least from my point of view.

Reported solutions in the link. My solution, is to use whatever version of Xorg Server was in Entropy repository before 1.8 got pushed in, or use 1.9.

(sometimes when bleeding edge is half-way bleeding edge, then it doesn't really look impressive :? )

I am having idendical problems: Radeon x1600, X crashing on restore from minimized.

I'm fairly new here. how do I upgrade or even downgrade my version of xorg-server when it's not in the main repo?

this would be a good learning experience if someone would walk me through software version manipulation.

thanks all. this is a great forum.

Argonaut.
How did you manage to install a different version of xorg-server 1.8.2?
Try using unmask for 1.9 and mask for 1.7 but I can not install a different 1.8.

I didn't install a different version, and also I am managing my system through equo, so I cannot offer any intelligent help with portage!

My solution:
1. keep xorg-server 1.8.2
2. install and use compiz (and the relevant packages that come with it) - works faster than KWin, but is more unstable (random changes of behavior, forgets settings, rare crashes, etc.)

Cheers and happy new year!

Code: Select all

# eix xorg-server
[I] x11-base/xorg-server
     Available versions:  1.7.6 1.7.7-r1 1.7.7-r1[1] (~)1.8.2 (~)1.8.2[1] 1.9.2 1.9.2[1] (~)1.9.2.902 {debug dmx doc hal ipv6 kdrive minimal nptl sdl static-libs tslib +udev xorg}
     Installed versions: 1.9.2.902(15:21:40 30/12/10)(kdrive nptl udev xorg -dmx -doc -ipv6 -minimal -static-libs -tslib)
     Homepage:            http://xorg.freedesktop.org/
     Description:         X.Org X servers

[1] "sabayon" /var/lib/layman/sabayon
The versions of X.Org Server available in the Portage main tree or Sabayon overlay are listed by the eix command above. I have not read through the previous posts, but if anyone wants to use Portage to get a previous version of xorg-server that's in the Portage main tree:

Code: Select all

# emerge --sync && layman -S
# emerge -1v =xorg-server-<version>::gentoo

or Sabayon Portage overlay:

Code: Select all

# emerge --sync && layman -S
# emerge -1v =xorg-server-<version>::sabayon
(You don't need to repeat the emerge --sync && layman -S if you've done it once already today.)

In either case you MUST then recompile all the X.Org drivers that you have currently got installed:

Code: Select all

# emerge -1v `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`
(You might find you can uninstall a lot of those, as a lot of drivers are installed unnecessarily to cater for a wide range of hardware that not everybody has.)

You can tell what X.Org drivers are currently installed by using the pretend switch in the above command. On my main laptop, or example:

Code: Select all

# emerge -1vp `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 10 packages (10 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Portage tree and overlays:

Don't forget to do:

Code: Select all

# equo rescue spmsync
after it all, to tell Entropy what you did via Portage.

Fix the problem disabled all effects.
