i assume Gnome and KDE were chosen for their completeness, which is one of the key elements that made me decide on KDE.

The ability to change the layout of the GUI is the other. i NEED the option to disable menubars and change the position of the toolbars (and the icons) to the side or to the bottom. The 16:9 and 16:10 displays make it necessary. i have trouble working with just a narrow line of a document or browse the web like that.

And am i the only one who wants to put the window title and controls on the side or bottom?

there are time when using KDE especially since "tabbed windows" that it would be cool to 'shade' a whole group from the bottom instead of only having the heading bar at the top. sort of like yakuake but from the bottom of the screen.

Definitely KDE. Like many people, I was irritated by KDE4 when it first appeared but stuck with it and have grown to love it. Gnome has never appealed.
I do have a liking for the extremely elegant look of E17 in Elive but have only used that as a live disc since choosing Sabayon. When I once installed it I found the way of adding programmes to a menu irritating beyond belief and assume that is still the case.

Gnome here.

- KDE is too distracting for me.
- KDE is too many clicks to get where I need to be.
- KDE is not stable enough for me.

Poll doesn't have enough options to be valid really

Between, Gnome, KDE, awesome, fluxbox on my current installs, I have also had the others, e17, lxde, etc. But top main ones would be Gnome, KDE and awesome.

I'm with Joost, I find it hard to be productive in KDE

Dolphin, kate, etc work transparently with remote sites.
Dolphin is faster than nautilus listing files.
I can put the bar to the side on kde.
I can hide menus on all apps and use only the buttons I want.
Last, okular is better than evince.

Still, I use xmonad most of the time :)

I like Okular better as well, but I run Okular in Gnome.

Right now I am using Fluxbox, because I like fast, minimalist systems. It runs great, and I love it. I've never liked the look of KDE. Couple that with the fact that it is the least stable of the three (Gnome, Fluxbox, KDE) on my system, and also runs the slowest, I can't see a reason to use it.

But I'm rarely even in Gnome anymore. Fluxbox is where I spent 98% of my time.

That is what is nice about a WM, can have the heavy bloated desktop sitting there and use it via the WM. I will use awesome + gnome combo.

As I see, young people prefer KDE, middle-age gnome, and older other light weight desktops.
Of course, I use KDE. 8)
