sabayon 4.1 gnome won't load after most recent update

Post by sabubuntu » Sat May 23, 2009 15:52

I have just updated my laptop. The update included the most recent gnome release I believe version 2. After I login to the machine all I get is a gnome logo inside a window and the default desktop background. I have let the computer sit for over 30 min and it still won't bring up the desktop. The computer isn't frozen because I can still access the terminal and use the mouse. This has happened twice to me now. The first time I had my computer up to date and then a week later I went to check for updates and it found the gnome update. After I installed that update and restarted the computer I got the screen as mentioned above. So I decided to do a fresh install of sabayon 4.1 it installed perfectly fine and then I went to do the updates which included gnome 2 and again after restarting my laptop I got the same window as mentioned above. My guess is that it has something to do with the gnome update that was pushed out. I would like to install the most recent version of gnome. Perhaps this is a bug. Any help would be appreciated on how to go about fixing the situation. I would like to try to fix it rather than just ignoring the gnome update.

Thanks

You MUST have latest entropy version before doing world update.

Code: Select all

equo install gnome-session
And try the forum search next time please.

I am not sure what joost is talking about but I was able to figure it out for myself. For other people having this problem here is what you do. Follow through the directions for doing a fresh install of entropy http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Entropy. Also make sure to do the world updates but not before updating entropy. Then type

Code: Select all

emerge -C spritz && equo install equo sulfur entropy
and then you should be back to having access to the new package manager sulfur http://forum.sabayonlinux.org/viewtopic ... 72&start=0

Don't emerge -C spritz. Dont mix entropy and portage.
And this has nothing todo with gnome not working either.
Before new gnome came to entropy i clearly posted on this forum and on the entropy notice board that you must update entropy before updating gnome.

let me clarify what happened. After doing updates for sabayon 4.1 I lost access to gnome. Then joost suggested that I have to install the latest version of entropy before doing world updates. the code that joost presented for me to use didn't fix the situation. So I reinstalled sabayon 4.1. After updating entropy I lost access to the spritz package manager. The reason I referenced the wiki entropy article was to show how I went about doing the updates both world and entropy. Then after that to regain access to what is know called sulfur originally spritz I used the

Code: Select all

emerge -C spritz && equo install equo sulfur entropy
according to joost this shouldn't be used. Perhaps he can tell us what should be used.

how I went about doing the updates both world and entropy.
No idea what you mean.

Its all over the forums to not mix entropy and portage.
The problem is the emerge -C command. If you want to remove something, use equo remove.

emerge == portage
equo == entropy

^^^ Don't mix

sabubuntu,

Is your problems resolved?

I also had this issue too. I just did this:
equo install gnome-session
Now I'm back up and running in gnome again.
