equo install nvidida-drivers killed gdm

Post by lleb » Tue Sep 30, 2008 0:06

i can no longer startx or gdm as GLX is fubar after installing the latest vs of nvidia drivers (just did it today so what ever that vs is) sorry i can not post my xorg.conf or any errors as well guess what? no GUI so no posting in these forums from Linux. i had to dual boot over into winXP in order to post.

what do i need to do to FIX the problem caused by updating my video drivers?

Boot from the live cd /dvd with the cheat codes say
xdriver=nvidia res=somethingxsomething

then once in kde / gnome / xfce you can mount the hd and copy the live cd's xorg.conf over to your hd's /etc/X11/xorg.conf replacing it or making a backup / renaming any of these that works for you , reboot and eject cd and gdm should work.

If more than this then the driver is unhappy.
I tried the downloaded nvidia website one just for laughs and kernel + gcc and other stuff makes it a unhappy camper.
No idea ho the equo / portage one works or if at all. LOL can try it now.

That is why nopaste exists

example:
nopaste /etc/X11/xorg.conf << will return a URL of your file posted on a website for easy viewing

but that isn't the file you need anyway - you need the xorg log file

nopaste /path/to/file will provide a URL even if no GUI present?

and no my xorg.conf is not the issue so it would seem. more then a little miffed atm.

if you recently updated your stuff - check and see what your opengl is at

eselect opengl list
wolf64 wolfden # eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] nvidia
[3] xorg-x11 *
notice the * is at xorg-x11, you need to change it, so I need to go to nvidia by:

Code: Select all

eselect opengl set 2
than run:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/xdm restart
if you changed it to gdm than replace xdm with gdm

should all be covered here:
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... er_install

course this all has to work with the correct nvidia driver with current kernel also - make sure your nvidia driver is for the kernel you are booting
