KDM freezes on Log Out [Solved]

Postby pajamabama » Wed Sep 24, 2008 4:10

Just wanted to post a solution I found to an issue that was introduced by the upgrade to KDE 3.5.10. I found that after the upgrade
1) the Sabayon kdm theme was not being used
and
2) Selecting 'End Session' was causing the system to log me out, but then freeze with just the X cursor showing, just before getting back to the kdm login screen. Shutdown/Reboot worked fine, just the log out failed.

Both are now solved.
1) Thanks to sjieke for this solution.

2) I added TerminateServer=true to the [X-:*-Core] section of kdmrc.
in /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:
Code: Select all
...
[X-:*-Core]
AllowNullPasswd=true
AllowShutdown=All
NoPassEnable=false
NoPassUsers=
ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X
TerminateServer=true                        <------- add this line
...

Hope this helps :cyclops:

Strange: in /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc on my PC the ServerCmd has an additional parameter:
Code: Select all
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X -br

I checked it and I also have the additional '-br' paramemeter.
The fix also works with the additional parameter, but I do wonder what it is for :?:

As a matter of fact, I don't have the problem of KDM freezing on logout, and adding "TerminateServer=true" makes no apparent difference in my case.

But I do have a problem when selecting Logout (as opposed to Shutdown Computer or Restart Computer): the screen goes blank, the usual KDM/SL login screen appears, I enter my password and my Desktop appears as expected, then Compiz-Fusion starts and... bang, my screen goes black and nothing responds any more (not Ctrl-Alt-F<n>, not Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, not Ctrl-Alt-Del). The only way I can recover is to power down my laptop and power it up again. (Shutdown Computer or Restart Computer both work fine, both with and without Compiz-Fusion enabled.) This happened under KDM 3.5.9 and still happens under 3.5.10-r1. Any ideas?

EDIT: Actually, after powering down and up again, I no longer have the problem, so adding TerminateServer=true did do the trick. So, thanks to you both for two good tips!

Thank you, pajamabama!

I was experiencing freezing on ending and sometimes on kdm reloading.

^That looks like a completely different problem. Try booting with the noapic or acpi=off cheat codes to see if it helps.

If one of those works, you can edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and make it permanent.

You could also try googling your error messages to see what comes up.

It doesn't take effect.
