Ati x700 Compiz not work how to uninstall driver?

Postby pepo80 » Tue Aug 19, 2008 21:07

Hi at all,

2 weeks ago i install sabayon 3.5 on my desktop-pc, all works well, but the size of partitions are not good for my use, so i have reinstall sabayon.
After this new installation the system is all ok, but Compiz don't start (if i start compiz manually i see only a white screen and mouse pointer...), in Acceleration Manager i see only the standard experience, but in my first installation i see the advanced experience too...

In another post on this forum i read this problem is solved by uninstall the close ati driver and install the open ati driver (the open work with aiglx...) it's right? How can i uninstall and install the open-drivers?

Thanks at all, and sorry for my english...

Greetings!

You're going to want to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, under the section "device" uncomment anything that has to do with desktop-acceleration or opengl - basically every line with a pound sign that starts it that isn't the agp line.

if you try to boot, you see a bash prpomp or only white screen?
in the white screen, use ctrl+alt+backspace, close X, and then....
nano /etc/xorg.conf
you see in the file xorg, in the lin edevice etc...
serach driver=ati and replavce it by:
driver=vesa
save with crtl+O and exit from nano editor with ctrl+X

therefore, in the prompt, you may try one of the comandos of the Xwindoe system open, such as:

startx
xdm
kdm
gdm
or
cd /etc/init.d/xdm
xdm restart

one of these commands works.... try one by step, the sucess and what is the command that works, may vary accordinf to your ststem, the caractheristics of the open session etc... for ex... if you tried "kdm" and this not works, you may try "gdm"

What card do you have, and can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

First of all: many (but many) tannx for all replays...

You're going to want to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, under the section "device" uncomment anything that has to do with desktop-acceleration or opengl - basically every line with a pound sign that starts it that isn't the agp line.

I try but nothing is change... ( i edit file as root )

There is a "problem" (i think) the resolution of my display is 1280x960 (set by kde display proprieties) but in the previous file is not present ... why? (the file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf)

The white scrren appear only when i lunch Compiz by handle from menu. I open menu, in serach area i write Compiz, and i select the Compiz "executable", at this point appear the white-screen. If i press CTRL+ALT+BCK-SPACE return the login screen...

I have install only kde, and the default login section is in X mode (no text mode...) My video card is a Ati Radeon X700 on pci-express bus...
If some information is missing please re-answer to me...

greetings again

there are two things you can try. First is install xf86-video-ati, the open-source ati drivers. That could fix your problem, but those drivers are irritated by small things - it will try to limit your resolution to the smallest screen if you're dual-screen, and if you have a CRT it'll max out at 1024x768. Not great, either of those - if you do go this route I'd use emerge instead of equo, as there's a stable driver in emerge that hasn't made its way to equo yet. When that's done switch fglrx to radeon in xorg.conf.

Your other options is to change Accelmode from XAA to EXA, but again that's kinda buggy.

eh, not good. Here's what I suggest - boot the liveDVD again, and save /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the liveDVD somewhere. Then use it to replace your installed xorg.conf.
