Blank screen freeze [Solved]

Post by IceDragon » Mon Apr 28, 2008 8:58

Hello,

I'm still pretty new at sabayon (and linux), but I think I'm getting the hang of things. I do however still have a big problem.

I have my sabayon 3.4F installed on an acer 9300 notebok turion 64 1GB ram.

The problem is that after some time of screensaver, my screen goes blank. When I touch the mouse, the screen starts making strange flashing lines swooping around the place, but mainly remains black. Processes seem to go on though, so I think it's a GFX rendering problem. It also happens when I shut down my PC, but that's less annoying, because it shuts down allright.

I've tried a lot of things, looked through google, but I didn't seem to find anything.

Ctrl alt return, and everything works fine again, but it's not fun to loose all your work...

Thanks,

Nicolas

More info more info more info

Post your lspci for us.

What graphics driver are you using?

What graphics card are you using?

Use Compiz-fusion? What version?

(Educated guess, you have a NVidia embedded card and are using the latest >100.14.19 drivers )

I have a Nvidia 6100 shared mem

nvidia x11 driver 169.12-r10

I don't use compiz, because it slows down a lot on other opengl apps

And what is the lspci thing?

Ahh, how did I know. This is a known issue. Downgrade the driver to =100.14.19 Anything higher and Nvidia Geforce 6100 cards barf on the screensaver/reinitializing the screen. Please search, this is a well commented topic.

lspci is a command. Open up the Konsole and type

Code: Select all

sudo lscpi
that will give you an output that shows ALL your PCI hardware (i.e., all your MOBO hardware ex USB stuff).

Please search and READ THE FAQS!!!!! This command is given as one of the PRIMARY things you must post to get support.

Hello again

I'm on my windows box now because I lost my GUI. Shouldn't have unmerged the previous drivers...

I'm getting this error message:

Could not find .config in the kernel source directory.
ERROR: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.19 failed
Kernel not configured; no .config found in /usr/src/linux

I'm pretty lost now honestly

Look you REALLY have to READ THE FAQS!!!! 3.5 loops do not have the kernel sources. You will need to download the kernel sources.

Ok boot up linux. login (via the console).

first do a:

Code: Select all

sudo uname -a
It should output something like:

Code: Select all

Linux HPLaptop 2.6.25-sabayon #1 SMP Fri Apr 18 14:33:09 EDT 2008 x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
First we will need to make sure that the kernel doesn't build itself (that's the default behavior)

so we will do the following:

Code: Select all

sudo echo 'sys-kernel/linux-sabayon -build only_sources' >> /etc/portage/package.use
Then whatever the output of uname -a is emerge those kernel sources

(in your case it will probably be)

Code: Select all

sudo emerge -av =sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-2.6.24
Then finally do a

Code: Select all

sudo emerge -av =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.19
