Hey man, the 8.03's came out yesterday. They work amaizingly. They have a fix for our specific cards, and they work great.

"Compiz does now work with X Server 1.4 in Catalyst 8.02."

I'll believe it when I see it!

Here ya go...

Additional Info: kernel 2.6.24-sabayon (also tested on 2.6.24-gentoo-r2), ATI x200M

Whats improved - well the scrolling issue has definently improved, although not as smooth as it should be, video flicker has gone for me, but alas not in fullscreen. Compiz feels a lot snappier.

If I was marking ATI's report card it would still be "could do better"
A belated thanks for the info., freeallbadgers.

I've now merged the latest driver, AMD Catalyst 8.03 (ati-drivers-x11-8.471.3-r10), and it works fine with xorg-x11-7.2 and xorg-server on my laptop.

Although I've never been able to get xorg-x11 7.3 and xorg-server 1.4 working with my ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 in the past, I'm tempted to have another go now. In what order did you merge those packages? Is there anything special about the upgrade process that I need to take into account?

Didn't have to do anything special Fitzcarraldo, but as you well know theres always some element of chance with ATI installs. So keep all fingers and toes crossed and ...

1. xorg-server
2. xorg-x11
3. keyboard/mouse drivers etc
4. ATI drivers

I finally got around to trying it. Here's what I had to do to get everything working:

1. Add the nptl USE flag to the xorg-server and mesa entries in /etc/portage/package.use

2. emerge -1v glibc

3. emerge -1v inputproto (Not sure if necessary)

4. emerge -1v xorg-server

5. emerge -1v xorg-x11

6. emerge -1v mesa

7. emerge -1v mesa-progs

8. qlist -I -C x11-drivers (to get a list of installed drivers)

9. re-emerged the keyboard/mouse and other drivers (see item 8 above)

10. emerge -1v ati-drivers

11. Merged the latest versions of compiz, compiz-fusion, ccsm, fusion-icon etc.

12. Reboot (Ugh! Ugly X Windows desktop manager appears)

13. Edit /etc/conf.d/xdm and change "xdm" to "kdm"

14. Edit /etc/rc.conf and change XSESSION="Gnome" to XSESSION="kde-3.5"

15. Reboot

Now I've got the following package versions installed and working OK with the latest version 0.7.4 of Compiz-Fusion:

All we need now is for the XOrg Foundation and AMD to release versions of xorg-server/xorg-x11 and ati-drivers that will support the OpenGL video driver without flickering video. They are working on it, apparently, but I think it will be a while yet.
