AMD Catalyst 8.02 Linux Driver

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:36

AMD ATI Catalyst 8.02 Linux Driver released today:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... =999&num=1

"Compiz does now work with X Server 1.4 in Catalyst 8.02."

I'll believe it when I see it!

Just installed the 8.02 for my ATI xpress 200m. This is the first time I've gotten everything to work (compiz with aiglx, resolution, X, etc) since 8.40. Maybe there is hope for us after all.

Which version of xorg-server and xorg-x11 are you using?

Darn it! So you're not using xorg-server 1.4.0.90-r<n> and xorg-X11-7.3 then.

After trashing my system numerous times and having to either chroot in to revert, or having to resort to doing a complete re-install, I'm too chicken to try the new ATI Catalyst 8.02 driver with xorg-server 1.4 and xorg-X11 7.3. I'm waiting for someone else to take the risk this time before I take the plunge! As I said in my first post, I'll believe it when I see it. Anyway, you have at least given me the confidence to install the 8.02 driver with xorg-server 1.3.0.0-r<n> and xorg-X11 7.2.

I've tried each release since 8.40, and this is the first my limited knowledge/capabilities have been able to get working on my system. I was reluctant to try it, but decided why not. Are there advantages to updating to 1.4? I love Linux, but have limited time to actually learn more than my interests.

What's your GPU, luissteam?

Anyway, I added sys-kernel/gentoo-sources to /etc/portage/package.mask to stop the emerge of ati-drivers-8.455.2 pulling in gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r1, and then went ahead with an emerge -1v =ati-drivers-8.455.2 and it installed OK and everything worked after I rebooted (phew!). The display performance seems about the same as with the ati-drivers-8.433-r10 I was using before. The only difference I noticed with the new driver was that, when booting up, my external Acer AL1916W monitor displayed one of its 'grey box' messages (i.e. generated by the monitor itself, not by my laptop) saying something along the lines of "Please wait: auto configuring." It seems the new driver is talking more to the monitor.

But I still have not had the courage to unmask >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r2 and >=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.3 in my /etc/portage/package.mask file and upgrade to xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3 and xorg-x11-7.3, after having had so much grief with those and earlier versions of ati-drivers. I'll run my laptop for a while with the new Catalyst 8.2 driver before plucking up the courage to emerge the latest version of xorg-server and xorg-x11.

Anyway, the new driver has not fixed the well-known flickering video problem under Compiz-Fusion, which is a pity. I still have to use the work-around of changing the media players' Preferences to X11 video output instead of OpenGL video output in order to stop videos flickering under Compiz-Fusion (or, alternatively, switch from Compiz-Fusion to either the KWin or Metacity window managers). But at least the latest version of the driver did not destroy anything, which is progress of sorts.

Hey guys. Glad to see some of you got those drivers to work, as I haven't stopped regretting buying ATi since my first day with it.

I use the X1250 IGP that came on an M2A-VM HDMI MoBo

With the 8.40.4 that shipped with sabayon:
XGL is not usable for games (Sauerbraten [email protected]+ FPS, Nexuiz same during stress). Compiz works though, and OpenGL is somewhat usable. AMD CCC is broken (not a big deal). This is as far as I got, using the 8.40.4 Drivers with sabayon or installing the RPMs myself on opensuse.

I managed to get acceleration with the 8.42.2, but not compiz, under suse and sabayon.

My last attempt was with the 8.455.2. got latest sabayon-source, recompiled the kernel and rebuilt the modules as viewtopic.php?f=53&t=12438&p=71044&hilit=ati+aiglx#p71044
suggests. This resulted in XGL again (?!?!) and working compiz but no DRI, so OpenGL is out of the question and no AIGLX.

Has anyone managed, or got any idea, how to get DRI and AIGLX working with compiz using anything after 8.40.4 on the x1250?

What are those of you who don't have DRI doing? Does running Accel-Manager between session to disable XGL allowes you to have OpenGL on unaccelerated sessions with the new drivers???

Shouldn't we all just go to the ATi HQ and lynch them???
