No 3D after re-install (yes, I went through the guide)

Postby PaulFXH » Tue Jan 29, 2008 1:19

I have installed Sabayon 3.4f x86 on my MacBook (C2D, 2.16 GHz) four times in the last three weeks.
What might be construed as over-enthusiasm on my part in fact arises from me always seeming to mess something up as I struggle through the very steep part of the learning curve I'm on right now.
Nevertheless, I have managed to get most things working including 3D effects and wireless both of which have caused me problems (ultimately resolvable) in other distros on this machine.
Now, after my fourth clean-install (clean on BOTH / and /home) I find I can't get the 3D effects working at all although it's always been a piece of cake up to this.
So what did I do:
Used this guide http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=11723 to check what might be wrong
a) md5sum checks out fine on install DVD
b) Set up /etc/X11/xorg.conf exactly as stated here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_AIGLX
c) Running "glxinfo | grep direct" gives
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x65
direct rendering: Yes

d) Running "grep -i aiglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log" gives
(==) AIGLX enabled
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x26
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x28
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2a
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2c
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2e
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x30
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x32
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so

Other than the "AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0xXX", which I don't understand, everything else is where it should be for 3D effects to work (and indeed they have worked on this very machine, with this OS, up to just yesterday)
Nevertheless, when I try to run fusion-icon (either from kMenu, in terminal or using Alt-F2) the blue cube icon shows up, bounces around for about 20 seconds and then fizzles out and goes away without having done anything.
Note that prior to starting fusion-icon, I have of course used acceleration-manager to start AIGLX -- but that doesn't seem to be the problem here.

I badly need some help here as I believe I have exhausted all the obvious avenues.
Can anybody see where I might be going wrong?

Thanks
Paul

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I did add a bunch of missing stuff to the USE flags in /etc/make.conf
Here's the new stuff I added in:
gtk jpeg vorbis opengl png gif mad sdl truetype mpeg KDE Only: arts qt3 qt4 qt3support \
opengl qt4 qt3 qt3support gtk sdl png gif nls win32codecs bonobo kickoff

I'm not sure if that part that says "KDE Only" should really be there :?:
When I try to run "fusion-icon" from a terminal, this is the message I get:
Code: Select all
sabayon paul # fusion-icon
* Using the Qt4 Interface
* No module named PyQt4
... Trying another interface
* Using the Qt3 Interface
* No module named qt
... Trying another interface
* Using the GTK Interface
* No module named pygtk
... Trying another interface
* Error: All interfaces failed, aborting!

Thanks for any further comments

ummm no KDE Only should not be there

but did you rebuild the packages after you changed the USE flags? Just adding them doesn't work, must rebuild the packages that need em. Like video drivers and packages.

Rebuild? Well, no :oops:
You mean I'm going to have to recompile basically everything?
Any clues you can give me to make sure It get it right this time as I seem to be still on an extraordinarily steep part of the learning curve? :D
Thanks
