alonsoty, either side-view Nixie tubes (e.g. the HP counter) or top-view Nixie tubes (the axial ) would look good. Look forward to seeing whatever you produce (if you have the time to do it).

One guy I admire, Steve Wozniak, has a nice Nixie tube watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4R3hODnTGo

bobcollard, that does look great, doesn't it? It reminds me of a T Rex fossil footprint. All thanks to alonsoty.

ocinu, yours is out of this world ;-) It does look great. (My Compiz desktop 'theme' is not a million parsecs from your KWin desktop 'theme': I have a space skydome with the moon on the bottom of the cube, and the moon with part of the Earth on the top of the cube. I vary the Desktop itself, but one of my favourites is the Apollo 11 photo of Earth-rise from the moon.)

@ocinu
Beautiful, the background with the moon also match perfectly with Cairo-Dock.
One of my ex colleagues has used for years a background taken from one of the last scenes of the movie "Mission to Mars" (where you see the planetarium).

I go crazy for this: plan01_1880.jpg

@bobcollard
I'm flattered to see that the 'saby stone' was adopted in America!

@Fitzcarraldo
About Nixie tubes silently proceeds, given that the idea really intrigues me.
I'll start with trying to graphically build the tube base (then step by step).

@wolfden
Really nice, the fingerprints of Forensics.
Gosh! You usually use 8 desktops?

... I started with the elements of the tube! :D

Image

You think is better a tube with the old form with a pointed top or the newest spherical?
Any comments or suggestions would be welcome!
Thanks

By "spherical top" I take it you mean the following?:

or are you still referring to the top-view tubes such as the following?:

If you mean the former, then personally I think the older pointy-top tubes would look more 'real' and more interesting:

(Apparently the above image, which is an iPhone Nixie clock, is an artificial image. Pretty impressive!)

but, to be honest, I think either would look great.

Very nice the 'Guitar Skull Desktop'... returns the desire to listen to some metal. :wink:

Fitzcarraldo ok, let's use the pointy-top tubes (older style with traditional taste).
I am not yet satisfied with the interior ... (If I'm going at this rate maybe for Christmas...)
Image
Regarding your last picture (iPhone app), does not seem very 'artificial'! :shock:
I think it is the same nixie tube photographed 10 times to get the 'numbers'.
You see the same reflection on the bulb shamelessly ... and even creates a strange effect of visual field because the lighting is "wrong" (the magic of copy and paste).

I know that the most weight in judging a picture, it's subjective but ... :roll:

In my opinion (at least that's what I'm trying to do) you should always try to get the right mix of natural and artificial elements.

damn ... the glass! :cry:
I just begin to digest it a bit.
Image
What do you think about?
I have to adjust again the general lighting (now uses 3 levels).
The bottom of the tube does not seem exceptional to me...
I am working on a total of 18 levels of image (even GIMP crashed a couple of times). :lol:

to be continued... :wink:
