Network Manager not listing devices (Permissions?) [Solved]

Postby dontregister » Thu Jun 05, 2014 5:20

Hi, I updated to the latest sabayonlinux.org repo (2014-06-04) and when I rebooted, my Network Manager applet did not work. The icon does not appear in the notification area on bootup. When I restarted the service with systemctl, the icon does appear, but does not list any devices or connection settings. Looking at dmesg when restarting the service, I see:
Code: Select all
[  244.268754] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[  244.456353] r8169 0000:05:00.0 eth0: link down
[  244.456418] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

Also nmcli complains about the version?
Code: Select all
$ nmcli nm
Error: nmcli (0.9.8.9) and NetworkManager (unknown) versions don't match. Force execution using --nocheck, but the results are unpredictable.

I don't remember why, but I tried running nm-applet using sudo and the applet showed up in the notification area with all my connections and devices listed. I was able to use it to connect to my wireless. Of course, I would like to be able to connect without running it as root.

Code: Select all
$ cat /etc/sabayon-release /etc/sabayon-edition
Sabayon Linux amd64 14.07
Sabayon Linux 11 amd64 Xfce
$ equo query installed networkmanager | grep -i package
╠      @@ Package: net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.9 branch: 5, [__system__]

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe the update has changed the kernel and probably not loaded the driver of the wifi.
Please post the output of command:
#lspci -vnn
Read the line 'Kernel driver in use:' of your 'Network Controller'
Ciao

Code: Select all
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0032] (rev 01)
   Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company AR9485/HB125 802.11bgn 1×1 Wi-Fi Adapter [103c:1838]
   Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
   Memory at f0200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
   Expansion ROM at f0400000 [disabled] [size=64K]
   Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
   Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/4 Maskable+ 64bit+
   Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
   Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
   Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel
   Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
   Kernel driver in use: ath9k
   Kernel modules: ath9k

If the kernel is not loading the driver, then why would running sudo nm-applet allow me to connect to my wireless?

Thanks for helping.

Well, I somehow got it working again. Unfortunately, I don't understand what I did so I don't know what change made the difference.

These are the two changes that I can remember.
Code: Select all
echo "session      optional   pam_systemd.so" >> /etc/pam.d/system-auth

source: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd#sys ... am_systemd

Code: Select all
sudoedit /usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager-wait-online.service
## and add
ExecStartPost=/usr/bin/sleep 5
# at the end of [Service] block

source: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=837793#c1

My old connection configuration still does not show up, but at least I can make new ones now.
