No network after today's upgrade!

Postby Richlion » Tue Mar 04, 2014 20:45

Hello,
I just updated my system and my wired network vanished. No connection at all, when I click "enable networks" in the sys-tray, nothing appears, I can't even configure the network manually, as nothing is showing up in the networking wired section.
This is on KDE.

What am I supposed to do? Luckily I have a windows machine still working, so I'm completely cut-off from the Internet on my SL box.

PS. Right this is it, I can't even backup my system, USB mount is crashing with errors. A real big screw up. going for a reinstall!

Hallo...
could you check in a root console, pls, that your ethernet hardware is still recognised and the driver (module) is loaded after boot? You may check with:
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a

If you see your eth0 adapter, that is a good sign. Then you can try start:
Code: Select all
dhcpcd

This should activate a dhcp client, that you may have an ethernet connection for the moment.
All this will not solve your network problems with KDE networks, but the reason is that you should be able to operate with an internet connection on your SL box.
Btw, I've made an upgrade also today, and I don't experience any problems so far.

Same for me. I wanted the new libreofice in sabayonlinux, and i switched from sabayon-weekly, and bang! no network after restart. I currently revert for weekly and i see the network-manager downgraded. Now i really think that i will go for sabayon frozen.
And how in this mask feature work? i put
>=app-office/libreoffice-4.2.1.1
in my package.mask and libreoffice downgraded to 4.2.0 in update where network-manager also downgraded.

You switched from sabayon-weekly to what?

And how did you switch? Completely disable sabayon-weekly and enable sabayon.org?

Switched from entropy_sabayon-weekly to entropy_sabayonlinux.org today, update, restart and network not start. No nm_applet, no eth0 connection alive and up. Network settings from gnome control center tells me ~ that the "current network is not compatible with current settings". As i see in other advices over internet i try to change in
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.conf
from deny to allow everything, restart and still no network.
I managed to start network with "dhcpcd" , switch back to entropy_sabayon-weekly, update, upgrade, restart and network shine again. I see that network-manager was downgraded, and equo ask me to change /etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.conf, and i say yes.
I have Sabayon with Gnome.

First update was made with both weekly and sabayonlinux enabled. :(

This could help get you fully into systemd and load the latest NetworkManager. systemd may just not be started?

Thanks linuxfluesterer for a workaround. Seems to work for now.

I've made bug report about it, if anyone has any relavant info, could you please add it to bug report and confirm it? Bug #4621
Why, and how to add "[Solved]" to your post. Please read. ← credits to Fitzcarraldo

I'm also concerned.
Help my self with the following.
Enable networking in Networkmanager (as described above nothing appears) and then run net-setup, walk through the dialogs and after that my net is working again. But only for the current session, after reboot I have to do the same.
I guess it's a good time to switch over to systemd init !? I'm not sure how, I have read about a eselect command, thats is all ?
Is there any guide to get systemd as default ?

Ok, notice to myself, read (everything) before post ;)

Sorry, I did't realized that switching to systemd is an automatic process.
