Atheros AR9485 kills my wifi router [Solved]

Post by denijane » Sat Dec 07, 2013 1:47

Well, I just took my new laptop, it's with atheros ar9485. The wired connection works fine, but the moment I connect to my wifi home network and try to do something, my router dies. And by dies, I mean that the wifi network disappears (for all the devices), and the router needs to be manually rebooted. This happens everytime I connect with this laptop. The router works all right when I connect with my old laptop, or my tablet or my phone. So the problem is not in the router. Something in the way my new laptop connect kills. Any idea what it might be and how to fix it? If you need some of my configs, just tell me which ones.
EDIT: Ok, here's some additional info. I tried tethering trough my tablet, with it, the wifi connection is working and working very well I think.
I used another router (OpenWrt), and it doesn't crash. But the connection is very unstable, it drops at random, especially if I try to browse while downloading something, or even if I load two tabs in the same time.
So the problem must be between the Atheros and the Tenda router. I read somewhere in the net that Atheros has a problem with Netgear. So still, if you have any idea what this problem might be and how to fix it, please help. It's my brand new laptop and having a problem with the network adapter is not an option. If I don't fix it, I should return it. I read somewhere that then new driver fixed this, but I don't know if there is a linux version and so on.

Can you give more info about your setup:

Post output of :
  • uname -a
    rfkill list
    iwconfig (before the router crash)
    iwconfig (after)
what is the make/model of the router ?
last messages from the log (if any) about the wifi/wpa_supplicant/... : dmesg|tail -25
NB : You kernel need to be >= 3.11 for this card to work well with the atheros ath9k driver.

I have seen many post about your wifi card from google search : "ar9485 router failed"
(many are from windows 8 users...).

Ok, here you go (i'm using the tethering now):

Code: Select all

uname -a:

Code: Select all

rfkill list

The router is Tenda W311R
But I have the feeling that the only signal the adapter actually likes is the teathering one. So far the connection hasn't dropped even once. The Tenda gets immediately killed, the OpenWrt is very unstable and lasts for seconds to minutes.

Re: Atheros AR9485 kills my wifi router

Ok, here's what I did and it seems to have fixed the issues for now.
I edted:
$sudo nano /etc/default/crda
And added this line:
REGDOMAIN=BG
And the wifi with the TENDA router is working beautifuly. No idea what and why I had this problem. Thanks for the reply, because it directed me to the answer.
