Wireless will not work [Solved]

Postby Foxblood » Sun Jul 25, 2010 13:55

Hi,

I hope this is in the right area. I searched for entries that deal with the same problem but the replies either didn't work or I didn't understand them. Total noob. I have a fresh install and wireless cannot connect. I know I entered the correct WEP key etc but still no joy. I dual boot with Win 7 and that connection works fine. There's an unsecured connection that I can get on but, when I connect to that, I can ping but not get pages. I cannot ping on my own network. Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A brief update. I can connect with a cable so at least I have internet access. I resolved the issue of pages not displaying by disabling ipv6 in about:config in Firefox. I removed knetworkmanager and replaced it with wicd. However, I still cannot connect wirelessly. Wicd gives me a 'bad password' error. If anyone can help with this wireless issue, I would be eternally grateful. Well, for a while, anyway. That would allow me time to start figuring out why there's no sound. Cheers.

Do not use WICD as a network manager. It's buggy or something. I've tried 1.7.0 version on Sabayon and Debian and doesn't work on both of them. It also looks like they stop developing the program so WICD is probably useless at this time. However, Gnome/Kde Network Manager should work fine. Give us an output of "lspci" or "lshw"(type in terminal as root) because we don't know what your wifi card is. You can also try "iwlist scan", "ifconfig" and "iwconfig" to find out if the wifi is working(scanning networks)..

It looks like your wifi card(Atheros AR5413) is working. I can see the card scanning networks, it means it works so there has to be a problem with settings. I use WPA2-PSK-AES encryption and everything is all right. Change the encrypt, it might help.

I changed over to WPA-2. Still no joy. Do you think it might be worth changing back to knetworkmanager?

Rejoice, glory is ours!!

I re-installed knetworkmanager and using WPA-2 it connected right up. Thanks to all for all the help. Now, I can move on to my next disaster. Thanks again.
