network adapters not detected booting with SL 5.1 64 bits

Postby ccagnoli » Tue Mar 23, 2010 21:31

Hi!
sorry for my english..

I have a problem running SL 5.1 KDE 64 bits... booting with LiveDVD the network adapter is not detected (wired or wireless). I try installing.... the instalation finished ok... but without network adapters detected.

The strange thing is that I have already installed a SL 4.1 64 bits and all is working fine... I can use my wired adapter or I can connect using WIFI.

My network adpaters are:
Attansic Technology Corp. L1e Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100
Laptop: Acer Aspire 6930G

thank you so much for your help.

is an ADSL wired network?
Please, with some networks, Wicd net manager works better than networkmanager.
1) First, try to configure the network with this command:

Code: Select all
 sudo net-setup

2) If this not works, try to install WICD.

If you do not have net connection in this time, you may use other computer, download wicd from the link of the Entropy Repository:

http://www.sabayon.org/packages

Save the file in your pendrive or in a CD, and then, in your computer, install it using the graphical installer Sulfur, in the menu option "File" "install from binary"...

Wicd generally works good for both wired or wireless connections.

I already have tried with net-setup and nothing happen.

I have installed WICD (comes by default with SL 5.1) but I think the problem is something more basic like that the hardware is not recognized or something like that. For example if I run lspci the output is:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset PCI Express Graphics Port (rev 07)

07:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L1e Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev b0)

but if I run ifconfig the output is:

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

RX bytes:37248 (36.3 KiB) TX bytes:37248 (36.3 KiB)

so... there is no eth0 or wlan0 device...

I have a problem with SL networking on only one specific PC (Acer Aspire SA90 tower PC): the Ethernet (it only has wired networking hardware) does not work when I boot a SL LiveDVD until I lower the MTU:

Code: Select all
# ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492

All my other PCs work fine without needing to do this. Anyway, try the above command to see if it gets the wired Ethernet controller working, just in case it is the same problem.

Something else to try.

Do you have the following files?:

/usr/src/linux-2.6.33-sabayon/drivers/net/atlx/atl2.ko
/lib64/modules/2.6.33-sabayon/kernel/drivers/net/atlx/atl2.ko

(replacing the kernel version number to match the version you are using).

Try the following as root user:

Code: Select all
modprobe /lib64/modules/2.6.33-sabayon/kernel/drivers/net/atlx/atl2.ko
ifconfig eth0 up
