Mysterious cups problem

Postby vaettchen » Sat Mar 06, 2010 15:35

I have a small fitpc with pure Gentoo and cups installed that I use as my central print server.

I have various boxes with Sabayon 5.1 that use this little server for all their printing activities. Works out of the box with cups - in most cases...

I have on machine (this one here) that, after an upgrade two weeks ago, simply has stopped seeing the printers. All other machines work perfectly well. I have copied the cupsd.conf file from one of the working PCs to this one - no avail.

There is no entry in the /var/log/cups/error_log (there are quite a few from the time the connection still worked but nothing recent).

I can see the printers perfectly well in my browser with http://fitpc:631.

What can I do? What additional info is required?

Thanks for help,
Rainer

Same again:

I upgraded two machines the usual way (equo update, equo install entropy, equo upgrade), cups-4.3.1 got installed - and it doesn't see the cups server on my fitpc anymore. Using the URL http://fitpc:631, I can see the printers, with http://localhost:631, they are gone. Everything worked fine before the upgrade. /etc/cups/cupsd.conf (http://paste.pocoo.org/show/204527/) looks OK to me (although I may overlook some small but important detail, not a Guru!).

Any ideas or leads to follow?

Thanks,
Rainer

For one machine, I managed to re-establish the contact to the print server "fitpc" by un-installing the existing cups version and downgrading to cups-1.3.11-r11 via portage. Looks a bit old-fashioned but works.

For the other machine (the same one that i mentioned in the original post) this workaround did not help.

Something's strange here!
Any hint appreciated...

No idea, anybody?

Also after the most recent upgrades, no printing.
A system that does not print is quite useless - what can I do?

Thanks for help,
Rainer

Could it be something to do with udev rules?: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? ... 50#p691150

I seem to recall from various threads last year in the SL Forums that when CUPS 1.4.* was released it caused a lot of grief because it works differently to CUPS 1.3.*.

Thanks, I will check that out (I have looked at the thread, it may take a minute or two  ).

However, this seems not very likely because other (Sabayon) machines running cups-1.4.x have no problems, and I have downgraded the computer in question to 1.3.11 without getting any better result. I have made sure that I got a clean unistall (equo remove --nodeps --configfiles cups) und tried both portage and equo reinstalls. I have also manually deleted, at some point, the complete /etc/cups folder.

Anyway, will come back after having studied the thread you suggested!

Thanks,
Rainer

Edit: Just looked through the thread and found that it relates to local printers - but my problem is that the cups client on augeatur does not see the cups server on fitpc!
