Unable to set up WiFi on Mac Mini

Post by n8oay » Thu Jan 14, 2010 10:44

I have a 2.0GHz Intel dual core Mac Mini on which the Live DVD boots OK to the desktop. Everything seems to be OK except for not being able to set up the Mac Airport WiFi. I can't find any way to get it to search for my network. I assume I just don't know where to look. The WiFi works OK in OS-X Snow Leopard. Since I was not able to set up the Wifi I did not attempt to install Sabayon.

I have PCLinuxOS-Gnome working on two other computers, but could not get the current or older versions to boot on the Mac Mini.

Thanks for the help!

You should check if your card is recognized by the kernel, try to boot the Live disc and run the following commands as root:

Code: Select all

This should list the wireless devices.

Code: Select all

iwlist <wireless device> scan

This should search for wireless networks, you should substitute <wireless device> with a wireless interface, for example:

Code: Select all

# su

# iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:"Example"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: 00:0D:EA:DB:EE:F0
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:1234-5678-9101-1121-3141-5161-71
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=64/70  Signal level=-46 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

# iwlist wlan0 scan

(the root password in the live disc is root )
