Realtek RTL8168/8111 help [Solved]

Post by fluke420 » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:22

ok so i am basically a noob with linux again, i used to use opensuse many years ago and had got the swing of things, but after years of windows i have forgot mostly everything :S

anyways basically opensuse installs fine no net, sabayon installs fine no net, ubuntu installs fine with net, mint installs fine with net.

so my issue is this, i really dont like ubuntu/mint/suse all that much and i do like sabayon from what i have poked at. basically fresh install of sabayon, says i have internet and as far as i know it detects my card but i open firefox and nothing.

yes i have googled and no the turning power of plugging out from psu for 10 sec then booting up does not work.

any help would be great because i just cant bare to run "mint" which i currently have running.

im sure i need to provide alot more information, just ask and i can boot up then boot back to mint to post reply.

p.s. i triple boot mint/windows 7/ sabayon. mint and windows both have internet without issues.

Can you provide:

Code: Select all

lspci
ifconfig
dmesg | grep eth
as root.

Are you on KDE or Gnome?
Are you using NM or WICD?

Okay investigation shows that:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/191536

"Since in-kernel r8169 driver still has unresolved issues on some systems
(mostly on systems with shared interrupts like described here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/netdev%40vg ... 44981.html), I've
written an ebuild for r8168 driver from Realtek which seems to work well in
such systems."

Not sure if this is working but you could try it.

now i tried to make sense out of your replys above but for the life of me i just cant get anything going, i basically followed a guide on ebuild and done the following

made 2 directories in my /usr/local/portage/net-misc

1 being makefile and other being r8168-8.003.00

i put the makefile.patch into the makefile folder and put the r8168.ebuild into the r8168 folder then tried to ebuild them using the guide, yes the makefile is not an ebuild so i just left it but the r8168 i tried to ebuild and get the following message in terminal

sabayon fluke # cd /usr/local/portage/net-misc/r8168-8.003.00
sabayon r8168-8.003.00 # ebuild r8168-8.003.00.ebuild manifest
!!! Invalid PORTDIR_OVERLAY (not a dir): ''
Appending /usr/local/portage to PORTDIR_OVERLAY...
!!! /usr/local/portage/net-misc/r8168-8.003.00/r8168-8.003.00.ebuild does not seem to have a valid PORTDIR structure.

anyways im a noob with linux, used ubuntu a fair bit but thats mostly noob proof, can you give a quick guide on what i need to do if you have the time please, i really want to learn but without internet working on my sabayon im forced to use mint most of the time, rebooting for info on mint then back to sabayon to tinker about aint so much fun.

im running gnome with latest sabayon/kernel and its also sabayon 64bit if that matters, anyways thanks for any help.

Solved in IRC. Issue was the lack of proper nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf.
