You mean, you cannot install Wicd using Equo or Spritz?
like:
Code: Select all
equo install --ask wicd

Be aware that Wicd will not work with NetworkManager running,
(which should not be a problem if you uninstall it :D ).
In order to use it you should remove NetworkManager and do, in a console as root:
Code: Select all
rc-update add wicd default

reboot (or give the command, as root, wicd)
and then wicd-client should start you can start it from a console
Code: Select all
wicd-client

or somewhere in the KDE Menu.

To downgrade NetworkManager with Portage (be careful with Portage) do:
Code: Select all
emerge --sync && layman -S
emerge =net-misc/networkmanager-0.6.6-r1
equo database gentoosync

as root.

Now it is masked in Entropy also...
the recent versions of networkmanager and knetworkmanager seems to be bugged.
Wicd seems to works better, or the classical dhclient of the Gentoo, after a command

# net-setup

Crisandbea is right. networkmanager cannor masked.
im my systems, wicd or even direct dhclient command works, but my net is cable modem, configurated as router, not wirelesse

the networkmanager 0.70 is not masked in entropy........ the knetworkmanager is bugged, if we use networkmanager in kde4-2 , can you used nm-applet, or
removed networkmanager and install wicd.

I write this post just to confirm that also a noob like me could get Wireless working with nm-applet as Crisandbea said.

It also install something that is related to Gnome, and before installing it I checked with spritz how many packages I'll need to install to get nm-applet working...

and, they are not as much as I thought (it doesn't install all the tree of gnome-desktop :!: )

I tried wicd-client before, but I can't get my wpa2 working at home...instead as nm-applet that works perfectly.

Thanks Crisa :cyclops:

i had this problem once too and ended up just reinstalling Sabayon without NMv0.7 but i was wondering if anyone knew if networkmanager-0.7.0-r2 or any of the other latest updates cause similar problems.

in our overlay we have NM 0.7.1-r11 and nm-applet-0.7.1

emerge --sync && layman -S

emerge net-misc/networkmanager
emerge gnome-extra/nm-applet

we are still waiting upstream for the modem manager patch tho.

I've had no issues with it and couple others tested it ok. Try it if you want to.

Why don't you just use Wicd? I also like NetworkManager, but it's simply not working. So, I just use wicd and enjoy Sabayon :D

I haven't read the whole thread.

I don't use the init.d scripts for networking. I write my own. Still dhcpcd stopped working. the error was that the ip assigned was already to anohter MAC address... problem is that MAC adress was MINE!

I disabled the dhcpcd-hooks by renaming the file /lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks. then things worked fine.

the more scripts distros add... the more problems I have. I never used any hooks before Sabayon gave tehm to me and I never had any problems before.

It's easier to learn to type 3 or 4 networking commands than to deal with all the constantly changing scripts... gui's, init files etc. even in a enw network environment... I think I get going much faster than people messing with their gui's... but that's just me. Anyway, maybe this helps to pin down where the bug is.

I must admit I see the piont of checking the availibility, but I have never once been bit by it.
