No Internet on Live DVD w/ wired 3c905c-TX/TX-M (Tornado)

Postby curlynostrill » Wed May 21, 2008 22:46

Hi all,
I get the same condition with the LiveDVD PE and LiveDVD 3.4f i386.

I'm assigned an address from my router and I can connect to the admin page of the router but cannot connect to any address on the WAN side, ie. http://sabayonlinux.org. as 'sabayonlinuxuser'.

I searched the forum where most suggested fixes involve fiddling with /etc/resolve.conf yet
Code: Select all
#sudo find / -name '*resolve*'
yields no resolve.conf. On a previous attempt in PE I fiddled about ending up with a resolve.conf with my router as the dns which works on all my other computers (other distributions) yet still does not connect outside the LAN.

Code: Select all
dmesg | tail
gives
Code: Select all
[ 204.270487] eth0: setting half-duplex
and not sure but this seems to be keyboard realted:
Code: Select all
[285.570138] atkbd.c:  Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying access hardware directly
a few different entries like that

This is an onboard 3com NIC on a Dell Dimension 8100 p4 1300ghz

I didn't take the iq test on the front page at sabayonlinux.org but I hope it wouldn't matter... ;)

Did you try using net-setup to configure a persistant connection? It's probably nameservers that are the issue here.

Thanks, xingala. I'll try that once I boot back into sabayon. I believe I did try a few things on the PE liveDVD and that's how I ended up with a '/etc/resolve.conf' but still didn't work. I'll post back in a while.

On a different machine with an SiS900 PCI (onboard).
Code: Select all
net-setup
seemed to go ok but no connections outside the LAN.
Code: Select all
less /etc/resolve.conf
reveals
Code: Select all
/etc/resolve.conf:  No such file or directory

Sabayon looks great, but It seems to me networking should just work. I had problems with Network Manager in Ubuntu and removed it. From the other posts I've read re: network issues, it seems NM wants to screw everything up. I humbly suggest that NM be demoted to an optional component if it is indeed the cause of these problems.

I'll try to make a resolve.conf manually following the info from this post http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=12017 and post back results.

thanks.

If you have an ethernet port NetworkManager does more harm than it's worth. If you're wireless, it's a godsend due to automatic configurations. Buggy sometimes-auto is better than buggy manual, and it's a choice between those two for wireless at the moment.

Right. I see that most posts pertain to wireless, so I can see the high value there and I retract my suggestion.

However, I still cannot connect after manually making /etc/resolve.conf with a nameserver entry. I also quit Network Manager and did /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart but nada.

My router as nameserver always works everytime except with Sabayon. Now I changed the nameserver to an external nameserver 4.2.2.1 but still no go.

Beryl works though,... pretty and wobbley!

eh, 4.2.2.1 isn't an external namerserver, per se - here's my resolv.conf

### BEGIN INFO
#
# Modified_by: NetworkManager
# Process: /usr/bin/NetworkManager
# Process_id: 4306
#
### END INFO

nameserver 167.206.245.129
nameserver 167.206.245.130

Also, custom networking like this on the LiveDVD may not work due to the nature of a live environment... try post-install if you can't get it.

What do you mean? Along with 4.2.2.2 as secondary, It's a common Verizon dns server here in the States and always works...quite fast as well.

Am I missing something here?

I guess I'll try an install.

Keep up the good work. Sabayon looks to have great potential. I really, really like the idea of a Gentoo base yet (theoretically) made simple.

That's what I meant - it's verizon-specific nameserver, and only for some states... I should have assumed you were in one for which it worked (I'm not)

Actually, I don't use Verizon (yuck) at all. It always works for me with various ISPs but I'm in New York City.

I read these DNS servers use 'anycast' but apparently they don't work everywhere.

Well, here's hoping a real install will wield a working Sabayon system.

Thanks for the help and take care.
