No wireless ipw3945 after upgrading kernel to 2.6.25[Solved]

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Sun May 18, 2008 5:17

I followed the HowTo: upgrade kernel using genkernel in the SL Wiki to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.22 to 2.6.25. Wireless was working under the 2.6.22 kernel, but it has stopped working completely with the 2.6.25 kernel. I enabled the appropriate wireless networking item when building the new kernel (Intel Pro Wireless 3945), so do not know why my wireless is no longer working at all. Any ideas gratefully received.

Here's some data from my installation:

Re: No wireless ipw3945 after upgrading kernel to 2.6.25

Before anyone refers me to the Gentoo HowTo on Intel Wireless Pro 3945 (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_ipw3945), I should mention that I've already looked at that and am completely confused! ipw3945, ipw3945d, iwl3945, iwlwifi... :? :? :scratch: Clear as mud. Anyone who has the SL 2.6.25 kernel and working Intel Wireless Pro 3945 hardware, please get in touch! I'd like to see what your /usr/src/linux/.config looks like. Thanks.

Anybody? Nobody?

Anyway, I've posted in the following thread the results of my latest attempt at getting WiFi working again:

Hi

When you upgraded the kernel you should of used the config file that you can find in /usr/portage/local/layman/sabayon/sys-kernel/linux-sabayon/files. Copy this file and rename it to /usr/src/config before you compile the new kernel.

This config file has iwl3945 set by default and it should work automatically without you having to change anything.
btw: iwl3945 is just a more updated version of ipw3945.

With the new kernel and config file, you shouldn't have to download any firmware either as this should be included once the new kernel is compiled.

All the best

Dave

I'm facing the same problem... I also have no sound and the nvidia drivers appear to do nothing but these are different problems I hope. I'm trying to fix this problem as well, if I have any news i'll post them here.

[EDIT]

Which of the files in /usr/portage/local/layman/sabayon/sys-kernel/linux-sabayon/files should I use?

Code: Select all
localhost files # dir
2.6.23  linux-sabayon-2.6.23-amd64.config  linux-sabayon-2.6.24-amd64.config
2.6.24  linux-sabayon-2.6.23-x86.config    linux-sabayon-2.6.24-x86.config

The 2.6.24? Isn't that the old config file?
[code]

Effectively I did, Dave. They're the same (well, except for the date comment in the .config header!):

Code: Select all
# diff /usr/portage/local/layman/sabayon/sys-kernel/linux-sabayon/files/linux-sabayon-2.6.25-amd64.config /usr/src/linux-2.6.25-sabayon/.config
4c4
< # Thu May  8 22:53:17 2008
---
> # Tue May 20 03:46:23 2008

so that's not the solution to the problem.

Hi

That's strange. I got the intel 4965g wireless and it works automatically with the new kernel without having to change anything in the config file.

localhost dave # lsmod | grep iwl
iwl4965 112964 0
iwlcore 28416 1 iwl4965
rfkill 9760 2 iwlcore
mac80211 173480 2 iwl4965,iwlcore
led_class 7176 2 iwlcore,acer_wmi

My config file looks like this:
CONFIG_IWLWIFI=y
# CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_SENSITIVITY=y
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_SPECTRUM_MEASUREMENT=y
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_QOS=y
CONFIG_IWL4965=m
# CONFIG_IWL3945 is not set
CONFIG_ZD1211RW_MAC80211=m
# CONFIG_ZD1211RW_MAC80211_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_IPW3945=m
# CONFIG_IPW3945_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_IPW3945_MONITOR=y
CONFIG_IPW3945_PROMISCUOUS=y
CONFIG_IPW3945_SIM_RX=y

Maybe you need to download the iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode firmware from here http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads and replace the firmware that's in /lib/firmware

All the best

(No ipw3945 in my .config file, though, which should be irrelevant as it's deprecated.)

Is yours the 2.6.25 kernel or the 2.6.24 kernel? I've been ferreting about in both and there are several differences.

Once (if) I can crack this particular problem, I'm going to rebuild the kernel and turn off all the non-existent hardware in it. There's so much unnecessary stuff in the off-the-shelf kernel, as it has to be able to cater for all punters.

No point, as they are identical:

localhost firmware # diff iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode.downloaded_today
localhost firmware #

Any other ideas? Is you kernel 2.6.25 or 2.6.24? If 2.6.25 then I may have something to work on. Thanks.
