Connected but unable to access internet...I think? [Solved]

Postby Bill Gates » Fri May 02, 2008 21:19

I don't know if this problem has been posted in another topic somewhere else, but I have been pouring over these forums and the internet for hours in search of the answer. I am using a broadcom 1470 wireless card and running sabayon 3.5. When I boot Sabayon, kwifi says I am connected to the network, but when I run Konqueror or Firefox, there is no connection. Also, when I try and change to a different network (The neighbors unsecured) It will stop working all together. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great! I have been trying to use linux for about 2 years now but I always run into problems. Now I really want to get into it and get it working. If you need any other information JLMK...

Thanks guys!

P.S. I am really surprised my user name was not already taken...... :D

quite odd - give us the output of lspci and iwconfig so we can see what your computer's seeing. Chances are a new madwifi install will solve this one, but I've never heard of a connection breaking off like this before - are you using an encrypted network?

P.S. Satan is still available as a nick too ;).

I'm using an unsecure connection. I am currently at the university and I am "connected" to ccsu-wireless. Since I am just starting out I am dual booting windows and I can switch back and fourth to access the internet but I want to rid myself of windows all together. My system hardware says I am using a broadcom 1470 but apparently iwconfig is reading it as a 4318? I don't know. Any help is much appreciated.

looks like you may want to use ndiswrapper to get your windows networking drivers working under linux - it's a little hard to do, but there's so much documentation out there that you should have it going in no time. By the way, are you a new user, or is this a new problem?

Just to let everyone know, I am now accessing the internet from Sabayon. This is how I did it.

I Downloaded the latest version of ndiswrapper.
I deleted the ndiswrapper that came with the sabayon distro.
I installed the updated ndiswrapper.
For some reason bcm43xx loads automatically. This is what was tripping me up. I had to do "rmmod bcm43xx" then "rmmod ndiswrapper | modprobe ndiswrapper"

I'm not sure if I have to do this everytime because sometimes I can get by without the above step, sometimes not. Anyway thanks for your help xlnagla. I'm pretty stoked!! :bom:

you can put those command in /etc/conf.d/local.start or /etc/conf.d/local (in the start section, of course) if you'd like them started every time you log in. Whether it's local.start or just local depends on the version of your init scripts - I'm on the new openRC, so mine's local, the older ones use local.start. Anyway, just enter each command on a line

command1
command2
command3

and then save the file and those commands will start whenever you start your computer.
