Live DVD won't boot on new machine

Postby grazie » Thu Aug 30, 2007 8:44

Using 3.4e Live DVD which will not boot on my new machine, but works fine on an old machine. I suspect the new hardware may be causing problems. The machine is a Medion 6486 with Core Duo 2.66G E6750 processor and MSI MS-7358 motherboard with Intel G33 Express chipset. I believe Linux kernel 2.6.22 should support this chipset. The errors I get during boot on the new machine are

Code: Select all
umount: Couldn't umount /newroot: Invalid argument
!! Couldn't find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Determining root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot()::

The only Linux image I've been able to boot successfully on the new machine is an Arch Linux minimal install CD with kernel 2.6.19. I would really like to get Sabayon installed on my new hardware.

Found this some parts in french ?? but at least it lists the parts inside the motherboard and could help find a boot cheat code to get it working.

Might work: the bios is there a way to set which gets priority eide / ata or sata ?
SL will read your dvd as /dev/sr0 and hd as /dev/sda even if eide/ata connected not sure about the dvd drive if on ata/eide. Any idea how arch listed the drive order ? or even if you can get into arch and do a
# lspci
and post the lspci list.
Might want to boot SL live dvd and f5 + add dodmraid cheat maybe it works not sure.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies WarraWarra. I've still not yet been able to boot the machine. There is no way that I can see to set eide/ata boot priorities in the BIOS. I don't know the order in which Arch reads the drives, nor any idea how to find out - any suggestions welcome. I can't save the output of lspci either as I don't have a pen drive (or other flash device) and I can't get the network up (NIC is Intel 82566DC-2). However there were a lot of unknown devices listed. Finally the dodmraid cheat code doesn't change anything either.

You can try to search the genoo forums / wiki for the specific motherboard they have as the unknowns is the problem = no drivers or limited drivers. It might be a server motherboard or a non standard one that only a few persons use.

Still not got much further with this machine. From what I've read the e1000 kernel module should support the 82566DC-2 NIC controller, but I can't bring up eth0. Here's the output of lspci

http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/G33/index.htm

You are missing a pci device not sure what it could be. Could be the marvel see below.
If it has the inbuilt g33 video type device this could work:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... bmit=Go%21

8256x linux :
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... bmit=Go%21

Intel(R) G33/G31/P35 Express Chipset PCI Express this can possibly cause a few hickups but should not as someone else has the g33 as well and it seems to work for them.

Not sure why it shows the unknown as intel or the fact that the lspci does not show the lan connectors

The marvel sata raid chip might need some help not sure.
Marvell 61xx Marvell RAID Controller
Marvell Semiconductor (Was: Galileo Technology Ltd)
Marvell Semiconductor (Was: Galileo Technology Ltd) 6121 SATA2 Controller

This zip should have the linux driver for the marvel could be generic as in all marvel linux or only for lan or sata not sure.
http://files.filefront.com/Marvell+driv ... einfo.html
http://files.filefront.com/Marvell+Linu ... einfo.html

How to get it from here = no clue

Sorry late here and my brain "forest gump" LOL. Someone that know or has seen this chips / experienced them will likely help with installing them.
Looks like a lot of persons had issues in aug 2007 with this intel lan and drivers.

Thanks again WarraWarra, but I've still not got it going yet.
WarraWarra wrote:You are missing a pci device not sure what it could be. Could be the marvel...
Incidently, how do you know this?

I'm thinking it may be better to go out and myself another motherboard. Not having done this before I appreciate anyones suggestion an a highish spec alternative motherboard that's known to work with Linux. I'm assuming all I need to do before purchasing is to make sure the motherboard will take my Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor, DDR-2 memory and fit my my cabinet? Hopefully the MSI motherboard and G33 Express chipset will have Linux drivers sometime in the future.

I've read just that acording to a PCSTATS article...."At the moment only the Intel P35 Express, G35 Express, G33 Express and nVIDIA nForce 6 series (680i, 650i) motherboards are compatible with the 1333 MHz processor", which was published 20 August 2007. How do I find out if any these boards (or newer additions) will support Linux?

I was looking at the gigabyte g33m as this is small enough not full atx and the speed / performance etc is good , price is a bit high $130.00 or there about.

Missing =
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Unknown device 29c1 (rev 02)

Some part would not work or would not be recognized even if the drivers are there if the main part it has to pass thru does not have a working driver.

IE: laptop the ricoh chip for the memory cards needs to be active so that the firewire port can work as it goes via this ricoh part of the motherboard.
Memory card part = off in bios = no firewire = me pulling out my hair until I got this figured out. Same with motherboard part 1 relies on another to work , some work independantly but still need to talk to rest of motherboard for this to work.

Hope this helps.

See tomshardware.com and the matx review / testing likey now moved to motherboard part of their page for motherboard performance / info.

Edit: also search either the forums here or gentoo.org forums / wiki for the hardware you are buying or chips on it but 99% of the last 18 months hardware should work or might need a module loaded to make it work.

In the short term I've solved my problem by using Ubuntu 7.10 Beta (Gutsy Gibbon) which seems handle most of the hardware on my machine without problems. Hopefully other distros and specifically Gentoo/Sabayon will catch up soon.
