"cd not found" while installing 3.4e x86_64

Postby Urviech » Sat Aug 18, 2007 23:24

hi there, as said in the subject line i ran into a problem installing sabayon 3.4e x86_64.

i downloaded the iso today and burned it to a dvd. md5 was ok.

when i boot the dvd, and chose graphical installation from the menu, i see the following lines:

attempting to mount media:- /dev/sda
...
...
attempting to mount media:- /dev/sdc1
no bootable medium found. waiting for other devices.
attempting to mount media:- /dev/sda
...
...
attempting to mount media:- /dev/sdc1
umount: could not umount /newroot: invalid argument

!!could not find cd to boot, something else needed.
>>determining boot devices
!!root block device unspecified or not detected. Please specify a device to boot or "shell" for a shell

im using a asus m2n-sli mainboard (am2) with an amd x2 5600+

two harddisks are connected to IDE1
the dvd drive is connected to IDE2
another hard drive is connected to sata

i found another topic about that issue, but i don't understand italian, and the google translation is impossible for me to understand.

http://forum.sabayonlinux.org/viewtopic ... oot+needed

so how can i install sabayon linux 3.4e, i really want to try it out.

edit: dunno if it is important, but sda1 up to sda5 are ext3 formatted and there's fedora 7 installed on sda1. sdb1 is ntfs and has windows vista installed on it. sdc1 is ext3 formated, with some data on it.

forgive me my impatience but i can't resist the need to bump this topic carefully.

if you need more information, please tell me. to be honest i'm not exactly what you would call a linux pro, and i never tried sabayon or even gentoo before.

by the way did i notice, that fedora 7 doesn't recognize my dvd drive either. well, i don't exactly know when that happened since i don't use optical disks very often. the drive worked right after installation, since i used id to backup my data and so on. it also works fine in windows, so i assume it's not broken.

well if you look you will see there are many other posts and there is no solution, try a different dvd burner.

I ran into the exact same problem on my Dell Inspiron 9200. I burned the ISO for 3.4e on two different burners that were in desktop pc's and got that same error message, but the disks worked fine on other computers.

So, I burned the disk on the laptop itself and it worked like a charm.

I'm sure there's a deep technical reason for this that I'd butcher badly while trying to explain it, but simply put, keep trying different burners.
