I can confirm that the USB3 bug is fixed in daily 2015-01-21 MATE-dev. No problem booting from the USB3 ports now.
Unfortunately, the installer still doesn't start.
However, this thread can probably be marked as solved.

What about it? It has the same kernel + initramfs. All spins are affected and fixed.

I have tried today and it works. Great! Thanks joost :-)
But this problem stops me from instaling latest Sabayon on my new Lenovo X1 Carbon: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=32242
Please fix the installer... I do not want to change distro...

I was able to install 15.01 on an UEFI Lenovo W540 without any problems of the installer after disabling USB3. Can this be fixed somehow?

Now I"m still struggling to set up multi-monitor using the Lenovo Ultra Dock (the internal display can not be used, the external ones work fine, pretty annoying..), but this is a different story.

I just tested this on live (I ran equo update and then equo install dev-python/pyparted in a root shell on the live session) and can confirm this fixes the problem. You could use this as a workaround for now. (only on -dev images)

Confirmed. I have installed dev-python/pyparted from limbo and it has solved the problem. Joost you are the best! :-)
