UEFI installation: where to mount /boot/efi

Postby timewulf » Fri May 03, 2013 5:49

Hi all,

I hoped to find the solution here, because you are (one of) the first distro(s) I found, with working UEFI Live System.
But I stuck at the point, where Anaconda insists on creating the mount point for /boot/efi. What will I have to do here, that Anaconda is able to gulp it?

I created a new partition table with GParted as follows:

Device FS Label Size Flag(s) MountPoint
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/dev/sda1 fat32 BIOS_GRUB 32 MB bios_grub
/dev/sda2 ext4 GRUB_FILES 1000 MB /boot
/dev/sda3 ext4 SABAYON 64000 MB /
/dev/sda4 swap SWAP 8000 MB

Thanks in advance,
Timewufl

Yes, the EFI boot partition is a FAT32 partition at the beginning of the disk that must be mounted (but NOT FORMATTED!) on /boot/efi.

New Sabayon user here so I really don't know the ins and outs of the distro yet, but this seems a bit confusing. So please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Technically it's called the EFI System partition, type EF00, it is formatted as VFAT and mounted at /boot/efi. However, outside of the times the data in it needs to be updated it does not, just like a separate /boot partition, need to normally be mounted (noauto in fstab),

The BIOS boot partition, type EF02, on the other hand is a raw partition, not formatted, and never mounted. It is extra space to facilitate non-UEFI (standard BIOS) booting on GPT disks.

See the EFI specifications. There is only one EFI Boot Partition and it's FAT32. There can't be confusion.

The confusion is in your previous post where you first state that it's FAT32 and then "but NOT FORMATTED". It can't be both not formatted and FAT32.

I repeat: you should not format it
