Black Screen after boot of Sabayon Linux 7

Post by cchalc » Wed Nov 23, 2011 2:34

I am having trouble with the installation of Sabayon 7. I have tried installing both the XFCE and GNOME editions from the liveCD but both yield the same result...a black screen. I am able to see the cursor but can do nothing.
When I boot from the LiveCD it worked to XFCE but did not when I tried GNOME.

I have tried doing a full update.
I have tried

Code: Select all

equo install nvidia-drivers
I have also tried updating the kernel to 3.1 from 3.0

ISO: Sabayon_Linux_7_x86_G.iso
ISO: Sabayon_Linux_7_x86_Xfce.iso
both MD5 verified

I have a DELL Studio XPS 1340.

I think the issue is here, hope someone else can figure it out.... should work out of the box like other linux distros ... gentoo, ubuntu etc... but not sabayon.

I've read of a bug fixed in the latest nvidia-drivers 290.10.
You're complaining about X not working and yet you haven't provided any useful log? (dmesg output and /var/log/Xorg.0.log)

cchalc, if I remember correctly I helped you with this in irc with this and asked you to post here so others could see the logs and help. Forgive me if this is not you, is someone with same video card setup.
Would be good to show the logs lxnay asked for. Sabayon has a tool called cookbug In a root terminal

Code: Select all

cookbug
Will package all logs in one file you could post here.

I looked at Xorg.0.log and was perfect for nvidia, only error was dri
dmesg showed nothing out of the ordinary except it looked like both cards were trying to share same irq post that log!
Live cd works perfect, once installed was a black screen. We tried everything except get drivers from nvidia.
Completely updated fresh install, equo deptest && equo libtest
booted live and cp the working xorg.conf to the installed system, re-installed xorg-server, nvidia-drivers, re-installed with 3 versions of sabayon 7, I really cant remember everything we tried last week... I worked with him for 3 days on this issue, 2 days in a pm as not to flood the main channel.
linux mint installs and works fine, I am convinced it is some sort of bug. and lxnay is on right track.

The reason why I continued to work with cchalc is because he is intelligent, follows directions, is eager to learn.
Out of the 3 days it took two days to convince him to make his first forum post.
Is a sabayon/nvidia bug and short of going outside of entropy is nothing I could help with.

POST THE LOGS!

phinix - you should be using Sabayon 8 and starting a new topic instead of bumping an old one with that doesn't pertain to you.

You will need to check the logs for errors and info, nvidia should be working out of the box.
