dual boot with XP

Postby vp4cmb » Wed Aug 12, 2009 15:15

I am currently running windows xp and want to perform a dual boot with Sabayon 4.2 on a separate hard drive. Booted Sabayon to alternate drive, partitioned it and install all went fine. When I reboot the Grub loader is not present, boots to XP. I am very new to this. Can you help me?

firstly, have you set up the proper drive to boot on your BIOS (the one you've installed sabayon and grub)?
after that, grub should appear on your screen for you to select the OS to boot.
you will probably have problems when trying to boot windows, since that's a dumb OS that only boots if it thinks that it's the first drive.
solution? remap the drive on grub.conf file.

example below (you will probably have to change some stuff on your file, so don't just copy it):

Code: Select all
title Windows
map (hd0,0) (hd0,1)
map (hd0,1) (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

anyone correct me if i'm wrong, but I think it solves your problem :D

Reinstall grub to the mbr of the first hard drive
You are not the first person asking this question, have you looked in the newbie section of the forum
