I insert the SL DVD and and load up VMware Player. It begins to load but after sometime its says ' No boot filename received' and then it says 'Existing Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found'. And then a note comes up saying 'No bootable CD, floppy or hard disk was detected.
To install an operating system, insert a bootable CD or floppy and restart the virtual machine by clicking the Reset button.'

Can someone help me? I would really like to try a linux distro since I never used it.

like in a real boot sequence, you need to press F8 in vmware bios menu and to select you dvd device as boot device ... or to select it as first boot device ... but first you need to check if dvd device is added in vmware setup image that you created ...
linux is free, the expertise to harness it is not!
you don't make so much money selling open source software!
You make MORE money USING it, just like google!
