No working bootable editions for me since 3.2?

Postby sandwyrm » Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:44

I'm becoming quite tired of Sabayon lately, I haven't had a bootable version work properly directly after burn since version 3.2. Every edition that has come out since 3.2 has had some issue completely locking up and the latest stops on all my systems but are recoverable except my two AMD dual-core systems when doing the SabayonInstall when loading LVM for AMD64. I've tried both 32-bit and 64-bit CD and DVD editions on a variety of hardware and every single version since 3.2 has always required me to use custom boot strings and interactive boot to disable systems to get it functioning properly. As a happy observer of the Sabayon project for a while now I'm getting extremely aggravated with each and every release, I appreciate all the effort that is going into it and maybe I just happen to manage about 9 computers that nobody working on Sabayon has matching hardware for, but being as they are fairly standard parts (judging from message boards) and most of the equipment inside is standard off-the-shelf retail parts, that seems unlikely, besides the failures usually have nothing to do with hardware support (by appearance) and everything to do with some script built-in to each version to make the auto-configuration process run smoother. Apart from a minor annoyance everytime I want to try the new version hoping it will work by default and doesn't, I like Sabayon, but until I see a working version out of the box again, I will continue to avoid installing it on my system in favor a stock Gentoo which has never failed me. :? Keep up the great work and hopefully I'll get a functional bootable CD/DVD again here one day.

If you provided some more information regarding the problems, they might just get fixed. Maybe some dmesg logs and lspci outputs?

Look, I don't care that much, delete my topic if you like, I was more venting than hoping anyone would try to fix it, kinda fishing for others that have so far had similar experiences with Sabayon since 3.2. Here's my failed system list so far:

Pentium III 1Ghz - 3 GB Ram - 320 GB HD - 3 NIC's - GeForce 4600 (failed loading CD boot image)
Athlon XP 2400+ - 1.5 GB Ram - 800 GB HD - 1 NIC - GeForce 5500 (locked)
Athlon XP 3000+ - 756 MB Ram - 120 GB HD - 1 NIC - GeForce 5950 (locked)
Athlon XP 3200+ - 3 GB Ram - 1.1 TB HD - 2 NIC's - ATI X800 (to console - no GUI)
Pentium 4 3.? w/HT - 1 GB Ram - 120 GB HD - 1 NIC - 1 WLAN - ATI 300m - (suspect CD drive issue)
Athlon FX2 4600+ (dual-core) - 4 GB Ram - 750 GB HD - 2 NIC's - 2 WLAN - GeForce 8600 (locked)
Athlon Turion 4600+ (dual-core) - 2 GB Ram - 400 GB HD - 1 NIC - 1 WLAN - GeForce 6200 (locked)

Honestly, I'm just a lazy guy and everytime I get into debugging this kind of stuff it's usually more effort than I care to muster for something I just find entertaining or just want to work and I sure as hell don't feel like posting 5, 6 or more dmesgs for all these machines. All too often I'm too distracted doing other things with my time (porn, web development, network setup, porn, watching TV...) than to boot up a fresh distro and debug stuff, hell I went ahead and just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 7.04 on two of the above boxes (they were shared boxes so wasn't my choice anymore after Sabayon failed first) in less time than it took me to download my first Sabayon 3.4f DVD. Gentoo 2006.1/2007.0 and Ubuntu 7.04 are now on all the above systems and working beautifully. I'll try to remember and post up some dmesgs from these next time I reboot and feeling like giving it another shot if my post is still here but probably won't because I just don't care that much. More than likely I'll just wait for the next version and hope I have better luck.

Sure, i understand. Hopefully you understand posting complaints without any detail or information related to the problems, that nothing can be done about it.
