Mini 3.4, problem upon problem

Postby jmak » Thu Sep 27, 2007 6:33

Hello,

Mini 3.3 was a smooth sailing but with 3.4 mini I have nothing only problems, and not one but tons. I cannot install neither the nvidia driver nor the flash plugin. I tried in Portato but failed. I have to unmask something. On the top of it, the boot up takes about 7 minutes. The program fills up my screen with mysterious lines that I do not understand. This takes about 5 minutes, and only after finishes these printouts it starts booting. So I don't know what should I do. I paste the dmesg massage here maybe someone can make sense out of it.

Thanks,
jmak

Re: Mini 3.4, problem upon problem

The default nvidia legacy drivers is not in there anymore so it would need to be installed later and is for cards before the 6600 serious or earlier.

Booting use cheat codes of "nokvm noacpi dodmraid" or something along this lines to get by the slow booting.

xdriver=nvidia-legacy res=1024x768 added to the cheat codes on boot can also help. Check the correct spelling for the "nvidia-legacy" and replace as needed.
Unfortunately some of the drivers / settings at boot has been changed to support more recent hardware and this is causing you bugs so you have to manually add this cheat codes to get past it. See the readme file on the iso / cd for more options using any text editor to read it.

Legacy nvidia driver:
Code: Select all
[  297.381794] NVRM: The NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 GPU installed in this system is
[  297.381801] NVRM:  supported through the NVIDIA 96.43.xx Legacy drivers. Plea
se
[  297.381806] NVRM:  visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more
[  297.381810] NVRM:  information.  The 100.14.19 NVIDIA driver will ignore
[  297.381813] NVRM:  this GPU.

It will still work but will need more input on live cd boot until it is installed as this cheat codes gets added automatically to the installed grub.conf on the hd and uses it to boot as well then.

Hope this helps.

You can boot with the options: xdriver=nv opengl=xorg-x11 then install the distro and run as root: "emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers"

Ok. I've reinstalled sabayon with the options mentioned. It made no difference. After login as root I tried the command emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers . Calculating dependencies and hangs. Nothing happens, no error message no nothing.

And the bootup still takes 7 minutes.

The strange thing is that otherwise the system seems ok. Very fast and responsive, but emerge is not working, portato is not working, nvidia drivers are not working flash is not working and the boot up takes too long. With the last one I could live but the rest...

By the way, these are the lines that during the boot up the screen is filled up with. I mean, these 2 lines keep repeating until the entire screen is full. Each line takes about half a minute to print. And only when the screen is full the system start booting.

What these lines means? They don't appear with other distro. And they didn't appear with mini 3.3 either.

It sounds like you have a bad disk or bad iso

I am making small gains but still far from solution. I emerged the nvidia driver successfully by first installing the source kernel and then running the emerge command; but now I get the following errror when trying to use the nvidia driver.

localhost ~ # modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.22-sabayon/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid module format

and

nvidia: version magic '2.6.22-sabayon SMP mod_unload PENTIUMIII ' should be '2.6.22-sabayon SMP mod_unload 686 '

Any idea?

Three days of adventure into the field of nvidia installation finally did bare fruit. Now, the nvidia driver is working as before on mini 3.3.
I thought, I sum up the procedure I followed while figuring out how to install the driver so that the unlucky souls who happen to own an older computer don't have to go through the same thing.

Before you start installing the nvidia driver you have to install the kernel source

1) # emerge sabayon-sources

2)(Select the correct kernel if you have more than one)
# eselect kernel set 1 (for instance)

More here...
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... t=1&chap=7

Use "genkernel" for compiling, which will build a generic kernel as used by the Installation CD. (This is important otherwise the system will build a wrong nvidia module, look at the error messages in my previous posts)

3) Emerging genkernel
# emerge genkernel

4)Copying over the Installation CD kernel config
# zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6

5) Compile your kernel sources by running
# genkernel all

Now the nvidia driver installation

6) If you have GeForce 4 series (like me) it requires the 96xx drivers. For these cards, you should mask >=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9700 in your /etc/portage/package.mask file. This will prevent newer versions of the driver, which are incompatible with your card from being installed.

Now install the driver:
# emerge nvidia-drivers

This will compile and install the driver.

Open the xorg.conf file and replace "nv" line with "nvidia" in the Device section.

Restart X by CTR+Alt+Backspace.

That's all there is to it.

p.s
I hope that in the future releases developers take into account users with older hardware and make the legacy driver installation a bit easier.

The sabayon wiki has a howto upgrade kernel, could of just followed that

the minis are alway bit more difficult cause of the sources not being there. It's not like that with the DVD, boot up with the command above than just emerge the right drivers, restart X and presto.

Adding more selections/choices takes more room too - maybe a happy medium can be found
