Hard Drive installer for Small Older PC's please? 64MB Ram e

Postby vk4akp » Sun Sep 23, 2007 13:32

Here's the scenaro. I and many others still have older laptops and PC's with minimal spec's.

Is there or could there be made an installer program for Sabayon to be able to install a minimal version onto older equipment?

For example, I have here two perfectly good Thinkpad 380XD's With 96MB Ram and 4 Gig hard drive.

I would love to put a GenToo / Sabayon style distro on them.

There is already a project for a live CD that works very well. (Papug Linux). Yet another GenToo throw off.

But unfortunalty it does not have a Hard Drive install option.

Can anyone help with or shed some light on this please?

Core Instal?

As in just do a Stage 3 from GenToo?

I'm not sure what you mean?

I'm fairly new to linux too by the way.

I'm just looking for an easy hard drive installer for a GenToo based distro for 2x Older 96MB ram 4 Gig HD machines.

Yes! It is the 'Core Install' option. Just select that from relevant screen during installation.

OK, here's the update.

I downloaded the 3.4 Mini edition update.

I ran it and all the options come up with.

PANIC: Your CPU is to old for this kernel. (Or something similar).

Does this mean that Sabayon is a dead end?

Does this mean that Sabayon is not for the people, just for the rich?

Very sad. :(

You have to be realistic. When was that model sold? About a decade ago? Its spec. is very out-of-date.

Why don't you investigate some of the mini editions of Linux designed for older PCs? Have a look at the following list as a starter:

Hi, Thankyou for the list.

I would like to run something based on GenToo though.

There is one distro I know about called Papug Linux.

It is designed to run on small PC's and boots up ad runs very nicely on my old laptop as a live CD.

It is based on GetToo.

Unfortunalty the author does not have much time to devote to the project and it has no hard drive installer.

So I know GenToo based distro's can run on the older machines.

If someone can help this person add a Hard drive installer to his distro that would be a wonderful solution.

The project is here -> http://www.sylbal.net/index.html
