Steam for Linux

Post by bahamutsfire » Wed Nov 07, 2012 3:15

Hi community,

Steam 4 Linux is getting closer. I´m getting messages in Streamclient for my beta access, but can´t get any download or email from Valve. So i searched a bit and found this AUR package and this Gentoo forumthread.

I tried download an install the .deb with dpkg -i --force-all and got i installed until:

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ steam 'steam://open/friends'
ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt".
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 13
FIXED: install "Font Adobe 75dpi", thanks kyzh.

If you got:

Code: Select all

Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1352224866_client)
unmerge all emu-linux-x86-packages (unmerge -C) and merge it again to get the newest version(20121028 worked for me).
The client doesn´t start with intel drivers (couldn´t find opengl symbol), optirun works, primusrun not.
Big thanks to the guys in the gentoo thread.

And here is a direkt link to the dep-file http://media.steampowered.com/client/in ... /steam.deb

Code: Select all

LD_DEBUG="libs" steam helped me alot to find the missing libs.
BTW: here is an ebuild : http://gpo.zugaina.org/games-util/steam

I would install font-alias and the 75dpi fonts.
Then restart the x server.

That allowed me one step further.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I will definitely be watching this since I'll take Sabayon over Ubuntu. I'm going to see how far I can get myself and post back unless someone else has already.

In Arch, they removed from official repoitoires because legal problems. In my opinion, Sabayon should do the same while Steam being a closed beta.

Anyway, now it's an open beta.

Hi guys!

AWESOME: today i've bought Serious Sam 3 Linux via Steam. Works fine! Thanks to developers and packagers!
This is a great step for moving some users to linux and the combination of sabayon and gaming is EPIC!
