Dell announces the models for Ubuntu

Postby joost » Tue May 22, 2007 9:15

We will be launching a Linux based OS (Ubuntu) on the E520, 1505 and XPS 410 starting next Thursday, 5/24. We expect these systems to be less than 1% of our OS mix for the entire year which is ~20,000 systems annually. Please cover the huddle deck below with your team by EOB Sunday. If any questions come up, please let me know so I can address them before launch.

The goal of launching Linux is to continue to give our customers more choices to customize their new Dell. Providing more options to our Linux Enthusiast customer group will hopefully create even more Raving Fans!!

Are they still limited by Microdaft OS as to how much linux systems they can sell ?

Wonder if there will be and support via dell for this , o well no hardware support for any of their computers so likely no ubuntu support as well :(

It is unlikley they will provide support themselves. If it is running Ubuntu and all the hardware is tested and known to work, the Ubuntu forums are more likely as a source of support. I don't think Microsoft would try and say that Dell must sell only thier operating system, Dell would have very strong grounds for an antitrust case then.
Perhaps more importantly the simple fact that Dell offer them means that people will hear about them. If the average computer user hears that a major computer manufacturer is now selling Linux pre-instaled as an alternative to Windows they may be tempted to give it a try on thier next PC.

I believe it was mentioned they may provide support through Canonical. Bit limited in hardware options but i hope it turns out good.

My main concern is that they make available open source drivers for the hardware they use. This gives people the choice of which distro they want to use.

they will have to. when you have a big company like that you take precaustions as to not violate teh law, even one that is not enforced like the gpl.

i think we will see opensource drivers for new and old software because of this.

remember that they will probably make linux drivers for their printers etc now so they can ship with the linux systems (dell likes making deals like that) so even if you dont want to buy a new computer you can benifiet from old software getting drivers. i need drivers for my dell printer.
