20 Years of KDE : Happy Birthday !

Post by sabayonino » Sat Oct 15, 2016 18:32

The 20 Years timeline of KDE

Happy birthday
In 1996, Matthias Ettrich announced the creation of Kool Desktop Environment (KDE), a graphical interface for Unix systems, built with Qt and C ++ and designed for the end user. The name "KDE" was a pun on the graphic environment CDE, which was proprietary at the time. Read the original announcement of the KDE Project.

Since 1998 I'm using KDE (I think version 1.1 with SuSE distro on many discettes). And though I tried Gnome or smaller DEs, I have never changed to another Linux DE. Powerful system immanent with nice gadgets also I felt good with KDE til version 4.14.10. I still use as production OS.
Congratulations to the great work!

What I'm still missing on Plasma (KDE 5) is the possibility of individual Virtual Desktops with individual plasmoids, which both is a big point in difference to any Windows (standard) DE.
In https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341143#c167 this bug was discussed and after many criticism it was said (by David Edmundson) that in future this missed feature will be realised. I really hope so.

Thanks to all the devs.
