My computers are not smart phones-tell gnome3 and kde4 this

Post by lexonight » Sat Mar 30, 2013 23:18

I remember a time I would turn on my linux box, when I first started messing with linux ( the freespire days, before supposedly "smart" phones and yes they used kde before kde"happy fun good time"4 ), I could just turn it on and I got projects accomplished.
After the kde3 to 4 debacle, I switch to gnome and I got projects accomplished. Then gnome decided to make gnome"happier funner better time"3, now i just find myself looking for ways to not be on the computer. Because it's like seriously WTF, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Is this attitude for desktop environments "yeah that looks cool, who the f*** cares if you can work with it, it just looks so pretty"?
well for these two desktops. lxde is nice, it reminds me of an actual working gui environment

And what can I do if I want to run a GNU distro at my smartphone or tablet? Run LXDE?

yep running a gnu distro on your smartphone is so productive lol
I stated in my post getting things accomplished!
So you gonna program a new desktop environement from your smart phone?
Obviously your tablet and smart phone fonts are too small lol

If you don't like smarts or tablets, OK, but the problem is yours and avoiding people to use them is a bad idea.

There's nothing wrong with run GNOME or KDE SC in these devices. We have GNOME Shell and Plasma Active for these purposes. For the desktops, we have Plasma Workspaces in KDE SC 4 and the Classic Mode in GNOME 3.8.

So, no problem here. Just FUD. Also, I use KDE SC 4.10 in my desktop. It looks like Windows Vista, with excelent apps.

Well i am glad that works for you.
I can agree to disagree with you, my friend.
There is no such thing as a wrong or right opinion.
I do enjoy the way terminology changes and is promoted as innovation.
I just find it easier to use a laptop or workstation.

I am also going to disagree with this thread topic, particularly when it comes to KDE. I think KDE's approach is to make a great set of libraries and a wonder workspace that be transformed to work for any situation. If I attempted to set up a tablet like I have my KDE 4.10 desktop set up, it would be horrible. But that's because it's configured to be a desktop.

As far making gnome developers listen to anything, good luck. Listening isn't really their thing.

It is a shame what DE developers are doing to the PCs.

XFCE is a good alternative

There was a similar thread some time ago: Interesting views on how people view tech changes.
Interesting reading imho.

Using Mate now. Good old Gnome2 Look&Feel.
I can't tell about smartphones/tablets since I have none.

KDE slooooooooooowwwww
Just a trick:
Go to Kickoff > Computer > System Settings > Startup and shutdown > Session's manager. In the the part "at startup", choice "Start with an empty session".

Xfce's applications are terrible. Thunar doesn't have a search and looks very ugly, and it lacks a lot of other resources. Ristretto can't rotate images. The terminal emulator is buggy. ePDFView is a ****, it doesn't work properly with images, presentations of in the fullscreen mode. The calendar is a mess. Also, Xfce doesn't have a volume control compatible with PulseAudio. And the extensions use a lot of memory.

Summary: It seems with Windows 95...

Really, I prefer LXDE than Xfce. At least LXDE apps are useable. The only advantage of Xfce is the weather extesion.
