Looking for Input on Forums

Postby wolfden » Sun Jul 08, 2007 22:05

Sabayon Linux is always growing and I would like some suggestions for the forums as far as organizing. IMHO I think we have nice forums, but each section is over-whelmed with too many variety topics and serious posts are getting lost too easily. If we add more forums we would probably look at adding more moderators to help keep the place organized.

Some things I was thinking was instead of having all the Loops posts mixed in with the regular posts and to make it easier to report issues to have the Loops and future testing software in their own section.

How about specific things like beryl/compiz-fusion is running rampant among the forum, any really big topics that should have their own forum instead of lumped together?? Keep in mind that the more forums one adds the more confusing it seems to get for people.

I know skin selection is requested often, please don't ask for that here - I don't have the power to do that. If there is any skin editors out there, maybe whip some up and show lxnay your skills and who knows.

A big hand to all those regular members that are always stopping in and helping. Community support is needed big time to help each other get the best out of their experiences. The developers do what they can, but are busy and focused on upcoming things.

I think it's a good idea with a "loop future testing" section and a "beryl/compis help" section

I think the question (How do I ...) and problem (____ does not work) posts should be separated. Just a quick thought.

How about a gnome section :o

Seriously though a troubleshooting section might be a good idea.

'Networking & Wireless'?

'Multimedia'?

'Pimp my Desktop' (themes, icons, kickers and all that jazz)?

'Games'?

'Art & Graphics'?

'Other OSs'?

'Science & Engineering'?

'Package Management'?

'Education'?

'Hardware (including laptops)'?

Yes I like that idea, but at the same time we don't want to copy or be a look a like of another certain site.

Any Suggestions?

Trouble is, they're good segregations and evolved naturally.

If you look at the groupings of posts in the SL Forum, there are quite a few posts which fall into these categories especially:

'Networking & Wireless'

'Multimedia'

'Pimp my Desktop' (themes, icons, kickers and all that jazz)

'Games'

'Package Management'

'Hardware (including laptops)'

I think the above are natural (obvious) choices, and not simply copying. Anyway, if something works well, why not emulate it? After all, Microsoft copied tabbed worksheets from Quattro Pro, Query by Example from Paradox and tabbed browsing from Firefox. Why? 'cause they were good ideas. :)

I use the "View posts since last visit" feature a lot, but it would be nice to be able to filter that list in certain ways, especially by language. If you only want to see posts in English, or Italian, it would be nice to allow that.
