Sabayon Linux "Business Edition" Wishlist

Postby Dark_MaGe » Tue May 29, 2007 13:36

Hi all, since sabayon is getting more and more popular...we're going to expand our project with another branch dedicated to to the enterprises, that will be developed as a side project to the bleeding edge sabayon. It would be based only on stable packages and it will ship with only kde and fluxbox, and will include any software that is needed to build a server or a business workstation. Now I wish you to write here a bunch of packages you wish to be included in this "BE" edition of sabayon that will start soon after then end of this week. Let us know ;)

egroupware

koffice - again, this should be a Sab default.

Any easy to use network manager (like Mandriva has) that allows you to set up static IP, proxy servers, etc.
wi-fi radar
OpenOffice (of course!)
Corel PhotoPaint
Scribus
Webmin
Skype
Plus the usual stuff (Thunderbird, Firefox, Mplayer etc)
I agree it should fit on one CD.
Desktop1: Sabayon 3.4e, WinXP | Desktop2: Sabayon 3.4e, WinME |

Kivio from KOffice (it was in 3.26) would be good in a Business Edition (actually it would be good to put it back into the Standard Edition).

And also, including Dia would be great:

^I'm no firewall expert, but I like firestarter, and the documentation and Web site are good:

Continuing with the suggestions for SL Business Editiion, a couple more things that should be included in my opinion are the e-mail applications Evolution and Thunderbird. Evolution is the Open Source alternative to Microsoft's Outlook on Windows, but does not have a Windows equivalent as far as I know, whereas Thunderbird -- an Open Source alternative to Outlook Express -- does. Business users will want something that is cross-platform, hence my suggestion for Thunderbird. Also, as it's cross-platform, it can be set up to share e-mail folders and files with Windows on a dual boot PC.

I'd also recommend including KAlarm with SL BE. It's easy to use and works well, and business users may find a good alarm program useful.
