that page is old; the b43 driver should be working without all the fiddling now. Please revert all your configuration changes to standard.

how odd. install metacity, and from a command line (not as root) run metacity --replace

See if your problem persists.

Re: DNS resolution and samba shares...

if you're using wicd you need dhcdbd; if you're using NM you don't. you shouldn't have to edit /etc/resolv.conf for anything; both wicd and NM auto-generate it.

Re: A plethora of problems.

well, a plethora of problems indeed! This sounds like you may have gotten a back package download during an update or install; let's take this a few issues at a time, in order of (perceived) importance. 1&2 - you should probably re-install dev-util/glade, libglade, and gnome-panel. Re: DNS resolution and samba shares...

to start, I'm really not sure that your DNS issues and your samba issues are related; however I may be able to help with the DNS issues.

first, what are you using to configure your network? Are you wired or wireless? Are you a NetworkManager or WiCD user?

gnome-open will honor your default gnome file associations. For more information about where those actually are, see these links: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linuxquestions.org-member-success-stories-23/gnome-default-file-association-setting-464729/ http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index....

Re: x high cpu usage

I've seen similar problems with my kde4 upgrade - disable compositing in kwin temporarily; if this fixes the problem completely, then kwin's handling of compositing is indeed your issue.

For the record, I switched [back] to compiz to handle all my compositing in KDE.
