Well at http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/about.xml you can find that Gentoo is a lot about building all the apps and once you install Sabayon you differ a lot from installing Gentoo. Gentoo wants you to tune your system from the very start. This means you have to install it the Gentoo way, even with th...

I've said it once before. Sabayon is its own distro with its own users and community. Well this is not the answer, this is just the beginning. Some first answers of the thread pointed out that Sabayon is its own distribution. This is my opinion, but this is the initiantion of a discussion, what we ...

O.k. I try to make myself clearer. I don't think we need a hacked BitTorrent version and I don't want that. Keep it as simple as possible, once we have reasonable model. My idea is: Setup some configuration, either in make.conf or if we don't want to integrate with Portage (unnecessary options in ma...

No answer *is* an answer ..... . If you have to express quite argumented opinions in no more than three lines of ascii characters because otherwise you get no answers, but if you do it nobody will understand you anyway (the APL way)..... Wink , this *is* an answer too. Rolling Eyes Smile Well, now ...

only thing about that is that it should be like linuxtracker and not just let any random guy mess up ebuilds. there should be someone to make sure it works before hundreds of people track or a way to authenticate them. BitTorrent handles all that stuff. Trackerless is relatively new and means it us...

Thanks veryhen. I hope that Sabayon is different, too. But hope is not enough for me to work on the project. When I, in the role of a developer, contribute to a distribution, I want to know what I stand for. I don't want to be in the situation that others simply take Sabayon and turn it into profit....

It's a pity, that most users of the forum seem to be interested in technical questions only. I hoped that we could at least find some definition of Sabayon here (there is none yet). I would like to know what project I'm joining and what I'm standing for and for what not. I don't want to be too offen...

But I believe binhosts aren't currently necessary.
Why not?

Gentoo uses BSD technology. (BSD is the greatest thing since slice bread.) Portage derives its name and general design from the BSD ports system of FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD. Traditionally ports is implemented as a complex tree of Makefiles. Both compile packages from source and allow users to safely ...

thing is portage already has support for binary packages and binhosts. the only difference is that then those capabilities would go to use instead of being vastly idle as they are now. nothing about gentoo says apps must be compiled; if portage has support for binhosts and binary packages then thos...
