what then puzzles me is that GParted shows all sda6 as full...

What should I do? I'd be quite happy to format sda7 (it's a disk in common to Sabayon and Windows, don't really use it), but then how would I add it to root?

earlier today I made the mistake of updating the system... mistake as I'm not at home and with only the laptop I'm writing now and that's my working companion, so to say. You're installing an external driver/firmware from sabayon kernel You must replay all steps at every kernel update/upgrade.
